You can’t say that with a straight face

Go to a dealership and try a 20 model and tell me you haven’t noticed a change. Hell even go to a 86 meetup and ask one of your buddies if with a lower mileage 86 they can give you a ride. Just because you’ve grown accustomed to it getting harsher and harsher over time doesn’t mean it’s not there. 180k without any suspension work I bet you can’t even drive your coffee to work without spilling it

I mean - that's what he meant by the "frog in the boiling pot thing".

I can say that with a straight face.... and this is from a 2015 ES I just sold last year after piling on 150k in less than 5 years. I actually went through the trouble of replacing everything on the car suspension-wise, short of the axle.

All the before/after work resulted in kind of no real improvements in the issues I was having (choppy ride quality over expansion joints, road noise, etc). Finally I gave up and "test drove" a CPO same general ES from my friend's dealer, and realized that I had driven the car for so long that I was starting to notice every small thing wrong with it from the first day.

A lot of the perceived problems that car enthusiasts may find in a car (that they've owned since new) is that they notice everything that can be possibly wrong. I am guilty of that, and sometimes it's just not there.

Ironically I sold the car because of a problem that I thought was just me, but turned out to be a major problem: the planetary gear bearing in the CVT was slowly going bad and causing a small humming noise at freeway speeds.

New cars are always nice.. until you start noticing what's wrong with them as well.

on a side note, if I drove 180k worth of mileage between Ontario California and Las Vegas, the car would be brand new. High mileage isn't the issue, it's the type of roads you drive on.

Sorry, straight face engaged.

Let's face it, it was never a smooth riding car, at least not a 2013. Relatively speaking, I'm sure it isn't quite what it was, but it's a few percentage points not perfect ride to trash.

I went from a 14 with 130,000 miles on it to a 2020 and noticed very little change.
Because yours was beat to hell and worn out does not mean they all are.

Garage
Driving out on Point Reyes when my Scion was brand new would have convinced any new car shopper that the twins were sold without any suspension system at all.

Have not managed to break it yet.

Okay Tcoat. whatever you say.. keep lying to yourself

I saw the for sale ad on your last orange FRS and THAT was beaten to hell and looked like you drove it through the safari everyday. Mine is a garage queen compared to your old one. Just because i change bushings when you're supposed to (end of their life) doesn't mean i beat the car.

Nice attack.

I didn't mean to imply that you beat up the car although that is how it may have read! I meant that the conditions you drove it under beat it up more than mine.

Yes the paint on my 14 took some crap after 130,000 miles on the highways. The suspension did not and the bushings were fine. The fact that I was upfront about the paint damage as one of the very few things wrong with the car at that high milage tells the real story!

The bushings on the 14 have not been changed yet since they have not reached end of life. The whole point I was making was that contrary to your statement there is not a drop dead milage that applies to all cars but it will vary on use and conditions.

My suspension still rides like new. And my bushings are fine. I guess.
The only problems I've had are TOB (of course), had the recall done (shouldn't have) and the drivers seat and E brake boot are worn.
Otherwise just normal wear items like tires, batteries, brake pads, oil, gas, that sort of thing.

This thread makes me happy. My 2020 just crossed 5,300. The car is so much fun I almost feel bad driving it because I do not want miles racking up. (that is not rational, I know haha)

Covid has kept the miles low, but even then, I only go to the train station 10 minutes to commute during "normal times"

I own the car in question. It is not "beaten to hell", there are quite a few miles on it but it's a $30,000 car. The ad describes it just as accurately as it is in person, heck I'll argue the ad exaggerated the wear as she cleans up quite nicely. The bushings are all stock and still ride quite nicely, even on track. The suspension also rode perfectly fine until I switched to coilovers for track adjustability, not because of wear/damage/being "worn out". The new owner of the suspension is also enjoying them without issue. Please don't speak poorly on a car you know nothing about.

That poor poor driver seat though!

Driving condition and habits probably matter most. A highway cruiser probably won't wear bushings hard.

Owning a car from mile zero gives a pretty good comparison on how tight everything was new.

Perhaps that should be added to the wear items that require replacement at x miles.
