I love it when people say snow tires are too expensive. It's not like your summer tires are wearing out while the snows are on, so essentially you're getting twice the life out of your tires.

It might be more cost up front, but it evens out to the same in the end.

My brother has been using Hankook Optimo 4S (at least I think that's what they are) for about 4 years now. They cost him around 600 for the set, including mounting and balancing. I guess the big draw for them is that they're true all seasons, and are winter tire rated. He replaced his first set this past year. Not a bad option for the lazy consumer who doesn't do a whole lot of winter driving. It's a big plus since you don't need a second set of wheels or tires and you don't need to swap wheels twice a year. Even still, at 600 bucks every 3 years, you're still coming out ahead of having 2 sets of wheels that get replaced every 4 or 5 years, but YMMV of course.

But, of course you aren't getting optimal performance in any condition. However, still good enough for probably 75% of consumers. I can see these catching on, especially if Ontario goes the way of Quebec and makes winter tires mandatory.

snows and insurance

im a broker and wish it was the law so we wouldn't have crazy paperwork for such a small discount. snows are important and needed. we were told insurance companies would be lowering rates 15% however we are seeing constant increases because the crafty companies change the territory you are in to a higher territory. nice.

Yup. They aren't going to lose money. Oh you saved 15% with your snow tires. Unfortunately you're 6' tall so your premium went up 20%. My insurance company offered me 'accident forgiveness' since I have a clean record. But it will cost me 70 bucks a year. Lol

Thumbs down forgiveness

yea it seems nuts to have to pay for forgiveness. essentially your betting against yourself. sheesh! the 3% winter tire disc doesn't even pay for 1/2 the tire installation but with this car winter tires are a must.

I've been getting a winter tire discount for a few years now and when I first got it, I asked about it and they said it would be verified in the police report if my car was involved in an accident and if I didn't have winter rated tires on the car then my claim could be denied.

But if I'm buying winter tires anyways, it's nice to get a little something back
