Looks like the BFGoodrich Rival S 1.5 is still king of the hill over the Advan A052. The A052 seems to wear much faster than the Rival S 1.5 as well.

Which is surprising to me considering the A052 seems to be a more popular track tire. Though GTA pushing it probably helps that.

The Z3 felt as he described to me though I was able to get pretty good consistency out of it even when hot, that could come down to the way a twin uses it's tires compared to that m3. It was strange to me he rated the RS4 as comparable as I did not think it felt like the Z3 at all and I didn't like it that much.

Now that I think about it the braking on the RT660 was very good and easy to modulate. I haven't got to run these on a track I am familiar with yet, but I was pretty impressed with them.

Just a guess but brand recognition is high up there too. BFG used to advertise heavily in the 90's and early 2000's and now I just don't hear too much from them. It also doesn't help that Advan has the cool JDM thing going for them. In any conversation i've had with people about competition/track tires it's always the usual suspects - Bridgestone, Falken, Advan, Michelin, Hankook, Kumho, Continental/Hoosier.

AFAIK Rival S 1.5 was never considered "king of the hill". Before A052, it was RE71R > Rival > all else. When A052 arrived it was generally regarded (and tested) fastest of the 200tw tires. I've seen results suggesting RT660 = or better vs. RE71R, assumed it was a couple/few ticks behind A052.

Results showing Rival faster than A052 are surprising to me, but maybe they've been quietly improving it over the years. Meanwhile I bought a set of 245/40-17 Nankang CR-1s and a set of 235/45-17 A052 for time trials this year, if I have budget left I might try the Rival S 1.5 before end of year!

My experience with the RE71R is that they were very good here in the PNW during Spring and Fall. But if run close to or above 80F ambient, I could kill them in a single track day.

They were a good tool that allowed me to play with GT3’s and GT4’s (I’m a PCA national instructor) running CCW at ORP. But due to the rapid wear, I couldn’t afford to continue running them.

They also seemed to camber wear more than any other tire I’ve used.

A student that I right seated with recently had the Azenis. He also made the comment that they were comparable to the RE71R. But long before I finished the day with him, I thought “These are no RE71R’s.”

Yeah, but they discontinued the RE71Rs. I thought the Rival S 1.5 was the best option for some time before the A052 released. I was under the impression the A052 was faster than the Rival S 1.5, but I am not so sure after seeing this test.

The 660s are close to re71s but not quite there. Yoko AO52s are your closest comparable

Great comparison. Keep in mind the Rival S 1.5 are just about the worst 200TW tire in the wet. I've run RE71R, A052 and the Rival 1.5's and really like them all, but I'm way more comfortable running the RE71R or even the A052's in the wet.

It was funny to see vid that best results in wet people got using tires like MPS4S even on eg. supercars like mclaren's .. i have strong suspicion, that regarding these particular tires tested it's less about which is best in wet, more about, which sucks less in wet.

New(ish), I've found the RE71R and A052 to both be *outstanding* in the wet at the track, in the pouring rain with some standing water. If you can keep your wits for brief instances of hydroplaning...

But they won't suffer from eg. excessive cooling off driving through puddles? Or compound of these tires doesn't need to be brought upto temps?
