Building my own oil cooler

Does anyone know where I can get jus the sandwich plate for the oil filter location? I know where I can get the actual radiator, and I can either make the lines or have the lines made for me locally.

This should be significantly cheaper then paying $500+ which I find insane...

I'm assuming you want a thermostatic plate?

You'll need spacers if you get the mishimoto one though.

How much cheaper are you looking at for your kit?
Most that I've seen come pretty close to the $500ish already built kits.

yeah, $500 is a lot of money...Im thinking around $300 when done. AN fittings are expensive, but not that expensive and the cooler itself should be around $100-150. I can make my own brackets now problem.

check out hayden themostatic sandwich plates, is the FRS/BRZ m20x1.5 thread? they definitely have one if so.

if you're really cheap, volvo 740 turbos are plentiful in junkyards and have a nice setrab core. otherwise, if you search "nascar cooler" on ebay you can find plenty of cheap setrab or mocal cores.

you might want to run an oil temp and maybe pressure gauge while you're at it, to give you some feedback on how well your cooler is working.

Yeah, I am definitely cheap...lol. But I do plan on buying a decent new cooler. And running a pressure and temp gauge is definitely one of the things I will be doing. The more info the better.

If you have not yet bought an oil cooler core, I have a new Setrab unit very similar to the one Perrin use in their kits. I was going to piece together my own kit but got lazy and bought the Perrin one, lol. PM me if interested

depending on your goals, there are multiple options that may save you even more money and headache.

One popular one is the Forester XT oil cooler retrofit. Around $200 for OEM parts. Bolts right up, taps throttle body coolant, and has shown to keep temps down significantly and consistently, as well as the added bonus of warming the oil 2x as fast.

Maximal performance has an excellent oil cooler for $450

Turned out cheaper than me buying all the parts individually.

i dont know about this brand's reputation, but i was looking at this sandwich plate + cooler combination before i decided to start the DIT based liquid oil cooler:
Sandwich plate
Heat Exchanger
plus hoses, fittings etc. for a total of $150 or so.
Only caveat is you can't use stock oil filters any more, so you have to use a Ford style oil filter.
I hope this helps.

I bought this one off ebay and added a note that it was to fit a Toyota 86 and he sent me all the right bits for my car including the spacer sandwich plate........... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Thermosta...item3cdc773be6

Only issue was that the nipples that screw into the sandwich plate were JIS standard and the flare on the pipe end fittings was JIC standard but once this was sorted it has been a good setup.

I did clean up the ports in the sandwich plate for better oil flow but after comparing pics of some of the brand name cooler cores and this one I could not pick any difference so thought it was worth a go.
