Throw-out bearing

My throw out bearing seems to be a little rattly at idle. I am hesitant to get this replaced. Is anyone else's unusually loud? I am half tempted to just let it go instead of having the transmission dropped to replace.

I am getting the HPFP noise now and this, this car sounds like a diesel at idle. I had to shut it off at the drive through even! Really??

FR-S Throwout Bearing Rattles

Hi Mike,

Yes my FR-S throw-out bearing rattles occasionally. (My car now has 4400 miles). The bearing was rattling today while idling the engine, I blip the throttle and when the RPM's drop to about 500 you can hear the rattling (and the bearing). When I put pressure on the pedal and do the same thing it's quiet (indicating the noise I hear is the throw-out bearing).. When the car had around 1,000 miles on it I ran it up to 7k in third gear on the highway and shifted and the bearing started squealing. Then it howled for a period of a minute before quieting down. It scared the crap out of me. I haven't driven the car that hard for the past 3,000 miles, just commuting back and forth to work with an occasional run up to 6,500 or 7,000 in third, but have never been in 4th gear yet at 7,000 RPM. So I'm nervous about it.. will it go during high rpm shifts - especially if I take it to the track this spring.. high rpm shifts might aggravate it...

I've experienced this issue since about 5k, and have about 12k now.

Happens every day on idle at first start-up, depressing the clutch stops the problem. This is the same sound I hear under decel, with clutch out in neutral, usually around 30MPH, per http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12429

Been having this same issue for a month or so now and was tired of the diesel engine in my frs so went today to get it replaced. (Not covered under warranty) throw bearing and clutch failure are considered signs of abuse. Although, I bought the car used and 30 minutes after I left the lot it started the rattling. drove it right back up there....so they charged me 350$, "replaced"my throw out bearing, and STILL making.the noise. Called back when I got home and the service manager just doesn't know what it could be. BIG ASS HEADACHE. Lets say they did replace it like they say they did, does anyone have an idea on what it might be...I'm stuck.

A failed throwout bearing or clutch is not a sign of abuse, it's a sign of a failed part.

Whenever you are dealling with service people, be calm but firm on warranty coverage. You did not abuse the car, the part is a drivetrain component, it is not a wear item, it is not working properly, and it is covered by the warranty.

Mine does it too on cold starts, almost every morning. I just been too lazy to replace it. And yes your warranty covers it.

How do you know it's the throw out bearing and not simply gear clash in the transmission?

If it was throw out bearing, it would likely make more noise if pressed. If you press the clutch pedal lightly (enough to load the throwout bearing but not enough to disengage the clutch) and the sound is still there, it's the transmission.

Mine goes away when warm or when the clutch is disengaged (foot on the floor). Mine is one of those noises 90% of people wouldn't notice though.

Car is noisy, will report when something fails

Mine makes this exact noise to and I swear it's the throw out, something to do with the clutch. Or the trans like another poster said.
The aisin trans in out cars seems hit or miss.

Any idea if an aftermarket clutch and throw out would fix it?

I just recently upgraded to an Exedy stage 1 and it's even worse now. It will make the rattle noise when warmed up and the AC is engaged (lower idle).

I'm thinking it may have something to do with the light weight flywheel? The noise seems to have started when I originally put a light weight crank pully on, and now it's gotten worse since lightening the flywheel. I'm going to put the stock pulley on tomorrow to see if it has an effect.

It's annoying as hell.
