Are you new to car forums?

Is it really that baffling? That people go out and buy a brand new car and it appears there's a reasonable possibility of major issues?

Not really? I don't think unexpected catastrophic engine failure is super common in this day and age, especially on a brand new car from a "trusted" manufacturer.

Yes, the interwebs blows everything out of proportion, but as a representative sample, it does seem there are a few examples out there now.

A "few" examples vs thousands sold. That's the point. Give up your deposit, call your senator, call the FBI. It's a very small percentage.

A few examples that we know of; that would be the "representative sample" part. You don't have to check 100% of something if 100% of those checked all appear to have it.

How many confirmed examples are there? You don't know, you're just feeding into the useless speculation.

Don't like the risk, don't buy the car. If you have one and you're that worried, sell it.

Yep, I think it's overblown. You don't have to agree with my opinion. I could be wrong. I'm ok to admit I might be wrong.

I'm seeing stuff on Facebook groups where guys are calling for recalls.

I mean a recall would go a long way to restore faith, it would be like 2 hours of labor to pull the pan, remove debris and reseal. $150x2x10,000 cars = $3m

Better marketing to enthusiasts then a super bowl ad.

As another forum member noted, correlation does not equal causation. 100% of the cars with engine failures may have RTV in their oil strainers, but that doesn’t prove that RTV caused the engine failures. Given that Toyota is fitting special baffled oil pans on their GR Cup race cars, I’m more inclined to believe the recent engine failures are due to unbaffled oil in the pan sloshing around during high-g cornering and starving the oil pickup. But at this point that’s just speculation too.

Catastrophic engine failure isn't super common on this model just yet.

But what I'm pointing out isn't that this specific cause can happen to any car, but rather that "something" can cause a engine to stop working on any car. It ultimately doesn't matter if it's a simple fix or a 2 month repair when you're 1000 miles from home - the issue is that most people don't find themselves a day's drive away with nowhere to be and no time to be there. The towing, schedule disruption, etc. are the bigger issue than whether it's because the engine went boom or because a sensor convinced the ECU to shut everything down for no good reason. If you can't fix it then and there on the side of the road the immediate inconvenience is equal regardless.

I have a 2001 S-10 that I'd drive coast to coast without a moment's hesitation - not because it's bulletproof, but because it runs well right now and has for a long time. Statistically, every car has a non-zero chance to quit on you every minute.

Best you can do is to have a plan for if/when that happens. Ideally Plans A, B, and C.

I'll continue to drive my GR86 hundreds of miles for work without concern. It'd suck if it broke down for any reason at any point between home and anywhere else, but every other car I might drive could do that too and it's just a matter of getting a tow, getting a rental, and getting on with the tasks at hand.

In the words of Aaron Rodgers, "R.E.L.A.X."

If there are only three or four confirmed cases of engines blowing, this is being blown WAY out of proportion. My current car is a 2013 Veloster Turbo and in the first year of production there were well over FIFTY documented cases of engines blowing up from low speed pre ignition. What did Hyundai do? They revised internal components several times in 2014, 2015, and finally figured it out how to stop them from blowing up in 2016. After five years and hundreds of blown engines they finally issued a recall... Just an ECU flash/bandage.

Every manufacturer has issues especially with early production models. My money is on them replacing engines as needed and if yours gets past the warrantee period you're probably fine. Is the 2.4 in the WRX having these issues?
