I agree with Vodka - It would be great if they would make an updated Roadster based on what they've learned with the Model S.

They made limited numbers of this model and is no longer in production. But yes, something like that but I would prefer a bit longer. That one was based off of the Lotus Elise.

Haha! I would imagine they have not thought about people in the track scene. The car depends on recharging while being out of the throttle and off of the brake. Still pretty cool he was out there. Car feels good at WOT.

Yes, I am bringing this back from the dead, but for good reason since this is specifically about the Model S. I'm with James May on this, I'd be pissed off too.

It's certainly a step in the right direction.

There are all kinds of Teslas around here, Model S, Model 3 and Model Y in order of numbers.
To me they don't look exciting for the price, especially the Model Y. That hideous flat bow front reminds me of a Studebaker Avanti, another strange enigma of a front grill. The Mustang Mach e also looks seaworthy in the front.
I wish I had a use for an electric car, but there would be no savings whatsoever with my low mileage, I'd need a charge every 10 days.
Anyway, until the grid-supplied power in the areas these cars are sold in reaches a certain % zero CO2/renewable sourced, it's all an illusion that it's environmentally beneficial, for now.
They certainly could make gas cars obsolete in the near future for high performance if the battery mass drops below a certain point. Maybe an all-electric Carrera GT3 can rock the 'Ring. Rear battery.

That's what happens when you let software engineers design a car.

I think electric starts making more practical sense the more expensive cars get because of heat and reliability, but most people with big money also don’t care about reliability because they can afford it. They want sound too and brand image.

Musk has always said being green is just one of the reasons. He said he thinks the CO2 experiment is stupid, but his thing was always that electric would prove to be the better daily for the masses and as luxury cars. Also, oil has a finite future, so might as well move on to renewables.

The path to renewables isn’t going to happen over night. It is already better for people to choose electric, as far as end of life carbon emissions are concerned, but even if it wasn’t, the path there won’t be some overnight flip, so we should expect a period where things aren’t perfect. The point is we are on the right path.

In a chemical reaction, the transition from one state of equilibrium to another state of equilibrium requires a period where there is less stability and more energy in the system. Some chemical reactions would take years to happen without a catalyst or without an input of energy to meet the activation energy needed for a reaction to occur.

Likewise, moving from a system where we are dependent on fossil fuels to one where we are living sustainably requires a catalyst, so the change happens quicker. That catalyst comes from private and public investment along with private and government regulations.

During this transition, energy use or carbon production could actually increase. For instance, I do agree that there was a time when a Prius may have been less green than a Jeep because of global inefficiencies in battery production. This is not the case any longer for electric vehicles. I do agree that BEVs didn’t make sense at one point because the cost per MWh for green energy was much more expensive than coal, but now that is not the case, and wind and solar are cheaper than coal. Moreover, BEVs weren’t greener if we were just exchanging burning oil in an ICE with burning coal to make electricity, but now that has changed. Even in states where coal is the primary means of energy production, BEVs are greener over their entire lifecycle, and this should just get better.

We haven’t reached equilibrium yet. There are still inefficiencies, but we are on the path to a better energy state—an equilibrium point that is more stable and desirable. I think it is easy to get distracted by individuals who point out the flaws in the current state of the system or in the energy input required to get from one state of equilibrium to another. Inherently, the instability of the transition is uncomfortable and triggers anxiety, concerns, frustration, anger, etc, but these individuals can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, nor can they imagine the vision of that more stable future. They only see the current energy state of the system, and they don’t understand that it requires more input to get to a lower energy state. From their perspective, if the transition isn’t a straight path down to a lower, better, energy state then it doesn’t make sense to change. This is asinine.
