I'm sure there are some 86'ers reading this and hanging on the fence...

Well, just go for it. This is your golden opportunity.
We won't be racing, we won't be competing, we'll just be enjoying our amazing cars in a safe and legal manner.

You won't be sorry, and the risk is minimal (really).

Yup, unfortunately, our dear friend is going to spend all his time leaning on his cars bonnet (or boot in his case) with his shades on and arms folded, trying to pull chicks.

Oh, @FT_86_SM_GP - for the sake of full disclosure here is some information that I picked up yesterday regarding the brake fluid:

Certain regular BMW drivers mentioned that when they attempted their own fluid flush, everything felt great until they hit the track. There was still air in the system, in the ABS controller, and a shop / dealer with access to the right high pressure hardware can flush the system taking this into account.

I also spoke to a Toyota tech who was there on the day. He said that with the power of the vehicle off, all the valves are open (even on the ABS unit) so the fluid will flush all the way through and all the air will bleed. Apparently, if the Toyota guys do a bleed, they do it with the normal bleed valves.

Thirdly, if you have already done the fluids, apparently it is possible for them to bleed air from the system but recycle the fluid. So if you want to have it checked out / done by someone else for peace of mind, please do.

Me personally - my car is due for its first service anyway. So I'm taking it in tomorrow and I will ask them to check the brake system for leaks and do a bleed on top of the regular service schedule. When I get the car back I will post any feedback I get here

Cool Thanks!

I took mine to Imperial Toyota Strijdompark today and had them change the brake fluid,

They charged me for 1 hour labor,

(Saw another Dark Grey 86 in the wash bay , probably came there for service)

Didn't mind paying as I don't have much experience with DIY work on cars, so won't take a chance with the most important element (Brakes)

Yup, I suddenly became very "aware" of the fact that my brakes are a system through the car and not just a pedal in the cabin. Out of sight, out of mind, as they say.

I asked them to do a bleed without changing the fluid. I really really really hope they don't change the fluid. If there's one upgrade that's essential, apparently it's fluid. Sigh. Not sure how I'd check besides eyeballing the colour, or maybe smelling it lol :/

On another note, they charge R400 for a polish

So some feedback on my service today:
  • I got fresh oil for Saturday, which is nice. They used 5w30
  • They had no problem inspecting the brakes as part of the regular service work, despite the brakes being aftermarket
  • They do a fluid bleed the "normal" way and therefore couldn't do it without using fresh fluid (because it would just take too long to cycle the drained fluid back in a safe way)
  • They actually asked for my feedback through this process
  • They said everything feels great, and that the car "drives a lot better than the other 86's they see with that sweet exhaust"

So despite "fixing" my loose license plate screw with double sided tape I'm pretty happy that they play along.

Here's a teaser for Saturday...

This is a rare video snippet. It's rare because it's the one and only time I've ever let anyone else drive my car on track.
So this is the only video footage I've ever taken of my own car. It was very windy, hence the poor sound quality.

The lucky guy was @JouMaSeHoes - and after all that, he gets himself a Porsche
If he wasn't my mate, I'd call him a filthy traitor, rip his heart out, and eat it

And here's what that looks like from inside the car.
Sounds like my car got @JouMaSeHoes excited, but not enough to avoid him jumping ship
