On a side note I finally got one of these VR headset deals and played Gran Trismo. The 86 looks amazing. Seems underpowered though ,)

TBH if you're hitting the major cities in Japan, you don't really need to know Japanese. Plus you can get those google translator if you need to ask a question.

I wanna get PS VR to play Gran Turismo... but couldn't justify the price, so haven't bought it yet.

It is more than console itself basically but it does have it's own separate processor and what not. Plugging everything is almost as much fun as using it, lol. Seriously though it's so much cooler being like immersed into another reality instead of just watching it on a screen. You can turn your head around 180 degrees, look straight up, straight down, etc.. One of those where has this been all my life type deals. I thought it might be hokey, but no it's like you're IN the game. The only thing it's missing is some electric shockers or something to simulate pain haha.

My wife and I checked out another bar today. I just can't do the dive bars here. Even the bartenders chain smoke. It's just too much.

So we found a non-smoking bar with a full kitchen. More like a little family restaurant with pool tables, darts, and a bar. Cool place, wife likes it. Two for one burgers on tuesdays. Pint of Bud is $3.50. Not bad.

I'd love to go again .

I'll go 50/50 with what Ichi said. Yes and no, you don't need to know Japanese per se at any of the major cities (that I went to at least, which were Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and Sapporo). But IMO it would've helped immensely.

Google Translate works super well, even for conversational stuff. The problem is it can sometimes be a little tedious because you might need to re-phrase something you want to say, or the other person may need to do that in Japanese, because the translation isn't always exactly 1:1.

I'm personally going to try to head back sometime next year and I'm hoping to pick up some usable Japanese before then. It doesn't hurt to not know it, but I think it'd definitely help.

loool. Sounds tasty? Maybe? lol. I wonder if it was somehow thinking you meant "squid ink" and then correlating that with tattoos.

Ya, I remember the days when I had free travel benefits - and I didn't even have to pay the taxes -
