You got all the advice you are going to get buddy, My recommendation would be to take it or leave it but nobody is going to tell you whatever it is you want to hear.

You are not mature enough to responsibly drive a motorized vehicle, I'm sorry no one has ever made you be responsible in life before and we sure can't "make" you do anything, but your feasible options have already been laid out, so like I said, take it or leave it.

I'd beg to differ. See bolded.

So a few days ago I rear ended a car and caused 7k worth of damage to my love. Insurance is fixing the car but I will have to get my own insurance. I've gotten quotes at around $800 per month! As a student, I can't afford to pay over $1100 per month to drive this awesome car. Since this car is leased, what options do I have? I can't imagine working all summer to buy a POS Civic and still pay $300 per month for liability. I'd appreciate any kind of advice.

Joe,
Reality is, you've royally fucked yourself and your father.
If I understand everything correctly, your father is probably going to pay for this in higher fees regardless, even if you get your own policy.

Do you live with your father?
If not, you can (father willing) have your father take over the lease and the car. He will be paying increased rates because of you unless he has a plan that has some sort of forgiveness clause.

Otherwise, you could store the car and reduce the insurance to comprehensive, which would be a nominal monthly payment until the lease terminates. You shall never drive that car.
Go find a beater and suck it up...

I really like the suggestion about joining the military but you'll still need to address that lease responsibly somehow.

I really don't see TMCC letting you out of the lease. Especially if the car has had that much damage.
I've seen some cases where the leasing company would terminate the lease due to a real hardship. In this case this is something you've brought upon yourself and any excuse would likely seem tenuous in light of recent events.

Seriously, get out of your lease any way you can and ride the bus. You can paint the situation any way you want, but clearly, something goes HORRIBLY wrong when you get behind the wheel of a car.

Unless public transportation will absolutely NOT work for you, put yourself in the SLOWEST vehicle possible before you kill someone.

Joe, I work in insurance, and we see records worse than yours.

You don't have many options because of your lease, which requires not only collision and comprehensive but also higher amounts of liability coverage and lower deductibles. It's the most expensive situation you could be in.

No insurer will touch a driver like you at a reasonable rate because the likelihood that you will cost them a bundle is so high.

In addition, you will pay a surcharge for both the accident and the tickets.

The good news is that most tickets drop off in three years, and accidents in three years as well (sometimes five, depending on the company). DUIs take longer. Every company has its own "look back" policy, so ask.
  • I would find someone to take over my lease, even if you have to kick in money to do so.
  • If you can avoid buying another car, do so. Liability insurance is really what is costing you here. A Scion is only worth $25,000, but if you hurt someone there can be hundreds of thousands of dollars at stake.
  • If you can get by without a car, ask about non-owners car insurance, which should allow you to rent cars and drive others' cars in good conscience. It's not usually expensive, and believe it or not, much cheaper than having a gap in coverage that sets off alarm bells when you go shopping for insurance the next time you buy a car.
Here's a guide to non-owners car insurance.

Time will fix pretty much everything if you're done screwing up. Spend the next few years keeping your driving record and credit clean, maintain some kind of coverage if you can.

Sorry the news isn't better.

The only thing I'm going to say about this thread is if you lived in my state you wouldn't have a drivers license as it would be revoked.

S.C. only gives you 12 points to drive on and only one drops of your record per year.
