FRS MT or AT?

around the time i bought my first manual, my brothers both bought manuals as well. i've still got mine, they had to sell theirs for personal reasons, though both really wish they could've stretched financially to keep the manuals...

with these new cars clutches, i really don't get what all the fuss is about with 'traffic' and manuals... i drove through chicago rush hour for 2 years with a manual.

find someone to teach you, or read up on how to do it, find a dealer with a manual, and try it! either you'll like it, or you'll hate it. i get bored easily driving. i love being able to do something else that interacts with the process.

You're looking for a nice RWD coupe to scratch that itch. That's exactly what the twins are. Do you want to burn a shitload of gas every day for a fast couch, or would you rather drive an adequately powered go kart? Imagine a FWD go kart. What a fucking wet blanket that would be.

my brother had one. with cut springs, blown out shocks, an obnoxious fart can heard 2 blocks away, a modded ignition switch because the key switch stopped working, and a broken odometer(previous owner actually tried buying it back, turned out to have well over 400k miles)

no joke, it was a riot of a go cart. and that's why his wife made him sell it and he bought something that he could survive an impact with a speed bump in.

I actually sometimes question the MT vs AT in traffic debate.
If you are proficient with MT, then its almost a non-issue IMO.

I never think about "oh my legs and arms are getting tired of this" because im just so used to modulating the clutch with my left leg and shifting with my right arm, its pretty much second nature.
It was actually very weird giving up the MT the first time around after driving MT the majority of the time because my leg and arm has nothing to do anymore lol. I would instinctively have my limbs just gravitate towards that third pedal and shifter, which don't exist.

I fully cop to being a die hard RWD snob. Unless I can spin it in a tiny circle, it's a hard pass. For the twins, all the extra sports car stuff is just bonus.

Really very few reasons to get the AT.. I owned both. AT is not bad but I've had infinitely more fun with the MT, it was my daily and things like traffic never bothered me. But if you're already complaining at 18 about being slow in your Civic I don't think you're going to have a good time with a twin. You get a twin because you like the feel of all the inputs and balance of the car. If you want cheap speed or something with actually some torque to the wheels probably a lot better to get a GTI, Veloster, Mustang, or a 350/370z..

My foot clipped the brake pedal the first time I stopped in an auto after driving a manual for so long. That's when I found out that the seatbelts worked.

speed's only good for tickets, and tickets are only good for blowing money you don't have on government cheese that you don't even get to eat.

slow cars are more fun, because you can recklessly hoon, and still not even top the speed limit. it's like a cheat code to a game few else are aware is being played.

Well there's also the whole gearing thing. I don't know about others, but it's what would put me off, the 'box is fine. But I like hearing lots of shifts, and the extra-long gearing of the AT would spoil that fun.

MT is sooooooo fun! My 22 BRZ is so fun driving within the legal limits, so engaging and entertaining. An automatic with double the horsepower would be so GD boring!

Drove my first manual 43 years ago. It's still fun!

OP After reading your responses I 110% think you need another car.

Something under 10k.
If this is your first car and you want to slide/track it you WILL be crashing it at some point.

Get the Z call it a day.
Or if there are still cheap 240's or 1st/2nd gen miatas do that instead.

DO NOT get a FRS/86/BRZ

And yes ONLY get a MT.
