The most accurate way of determining if you have been infected with COVID-19 is via an antibody test—and even then it's not 100%. According to the CDC, the tests check your blood by looking for antibodies, which may tell you if you had a past infection with the virus that causes COVID-19. "Antibodies are proteins that help fight off infections and can provide protection against getting that disease again (immunity)," they explain. However, antibody tests are not flawless. For example, a positive test could mean you have antibodies from an infection with a different virus from the coronavirus family. If you test negative, it could be because you are still battling the virus and haven't produced antibodies. "Some people may take even longer to develop antibodies, and some people who are infected may not ever develop antibodies," the CDC points out. |

I've had multiple people, I'd say around 6, tell me they are certain they had it (usually before it was a major concern or shortly around Dec. 2019). When I ask if they are sure, their description sounds very much like Austin allergies or the Flu. They have no official diagnosis nor do they plan to get tested for antibodies.
The people that did have it for certain have tell-tell signs such as cloudy head, the reduced lung capacity/ performance, lack of taste and/or smell, and were literally sick as fuck. Though a few that did have it said they lost taste and smell and are mostly ok.

I didn't say I KNOW I had it, I just assumed I got it a long time ago because I fly all over the country and come into contact with people from all over the world in some of the most highly trafficked areas known to man. I never lost my sense smell of anything crazy like that but I'm also not a fat smoker either... I've also been contract traced 5 times but tests came back negative everytime and never developed symptoms. So I assume I got it before it was even a real scare. I was in Vegas in March when it shutdown and everyone was getting kicked out of the hotels (luckily I was staying in a timeshare so I was an "owner"). Anyway if I had it, it was probably before they even knew it was spreading in the U.S. Either that or just washing my hands and wearing a mask in public has been good enough protection for me. Our business went up as people avoided the airlines so I never slowed down. So either I'm damn lucky, the virus is weak, or (most likely I think) I got it way early on and just thought it was a cold/flu. I mean we spray our airplanes before and after every flight so I think our passengers are pretty safe but then I go and airline home or out at the beginning or end of my rotation, lol.

My outrageously fit 26 year old son moved from the DC area to the Seattle area in January of 2020. Around the last week of February he got sick. For two weeks he was feverish, brain-fogged, suffering intense night-sweats and nighttime hallucinations, crawling to the bathroom fatigue, dizziness, wheezing, and dehydration to the point of orange urination.. After two weeks the worst of the symptoms subsided. After three weeks he was able to resume working - from home. 2 - 4 hours a day. The week he fell ill his employer adopted a remote-only work model. Another three weeks later he tried taking a few short runs. His habit prior was two runs a day - sprints in the morning - 4 miles or so in the evening. He lasted less then 400 yards and almost collapsed from shortness of breath. It took three months to get back to 3 miles.
At the time he got sick King County was inundated with Covid cases. He called them about getting tested the first week he was ill. They told him that wasn't possible. The few tests they had were being used on hospitalized patients. We "suspect" he had the 'rona. In October he tested negative for antibodies. It could have been a really ass kicking version of the flu. Several decades ago I had a flu that closely resembled his experience. The point to this? A fair number of really healthy, very fit people got very very sick last year. If you didn't have any symptoms, you really can't assume anything. Even if you had severe symptoms, my experience with the flu in the 90s suggests you still can't assume anything in the absence of a test. You probably got lucky. We did. He's still with us.

‘Long hauler’ study shows COVID can kill months after infection
"One of the largest studies of COVID-19 “long haulers” has proved what many doctors suspected: Not only are many patients suffering a raft of health problems six months after infection, they’re also at significantly greater risk of dying. Survivors had a 59 per cent increased risk of dying within six months after contracting the SARS-CoV-2 virus, researchers reported on Thursday in the journal Nature." Link to Nature article
