Not sure how the performance on that would be either. Any thoughts?
At that point of your just looking for looks cheaper coilovers would be a better option imo

I agree. My friend just did Konis with Flyin' Miata springs on his ND Miata and they're pretty good-- they handle well and all that. However, he paid close to $1000 when it was all said and done. For that kind of money, he basically got stock+ handling and only a small drop, just not worth it IMO. Save up the extra cash to do some good coils at that point lol. I feel like the handling dynamics would be similar to the Sachs dampers anyways. And no adjustability except dampening...

FWIW I do like my HKS Hipermax GTs on my Performance Pack BRZ for $1600, but next time around I might do Fortune Autos or the CSG Teins.

Hm, from what I've been reading it seems that the consensus is that a quality dampener like koni/billstein + spring combination would outperform coilovers in the $1000 range (independent of corner balancing, alignment, etc.) @Racecomp Engineering , any thoughts on the koni + a spring w/ 1.4 inch drop (i.e. eibach sportline) vs coilover?

What are you going for? Looks or performance? If it's the latter stick with springs that only drop by 1inch or save up and get some decent coils.

Hi there, I'm looking for best bang for the buck performance. It seems like at the drift events everybody is slammed on cheaper ($1000 range) coilovers. Because of that I am under the impression that lower height is performs better under presuming that roll center correction, alignment, etc is optimal (please correct me if I am wrong).

I was hoping that I could get better performance for cheaper with a used set of Konis/Billsteins & a set of sportlines (for height), similar to OP. I believe with used koni/billsteins & eibach sportlines, I could (maybe?) achieve better performance than $1000 coilovers, and have money left over to spend on components like bushings, angle kit, etc.

Please let me know your thoughts, thanks in advance!

If $1000 is your absolute limit, then I would avoid coilovers. If you can stretch to around $1400, there are a couple of good options.

I do like a good strut + spring combo, but 1.4 inch drop is too much even with Konis or Bilsteins for performance.

If you're drifting, you'll definitely want the adjustability of coilovers, and probably camber plates, LCAs, etc...

Konis & Bilstein setups are generally for people who want a little beefier handling experience but also want to maintain OEM+ look and feel. (Obviously being slammed on coilovers compromises that OEM sensation) I've seen some autocrossers using these setups, usually with either stock wheels or similar 17 inch aftermarket wheels, again sticking with that OEM+ theme.

If you're on a budget you might want to check out Fortune Auto 500s, around $1300 and adjustable. You can also customize even further by adding Swift springs and picking out your own spring rates. My HKS coilovers are nice for sure but I think the FA's might be a better deal. RCE Super Streets are also a shout but I don't personally know anyone with them.

Thanks for the insight @Shizuka, I like FA a lot too but didn't know what category it was considered to be in (good/bad) after reading people talking about $1k range coilovers.
@Racecomp Engineering do you have a few recommended coilovers for that price range? I think I could find a used set for less, just need some pointers as to which models to go for or stay away from. Thanks!

We have our RCE SS1 coilovers right now on sale for $1375. Come with lowering front camber plates and are damping adjustable. I use them on my personal car. They're an excellent road & track type coilover that's a great value.

Another option in the price range would be CSG Tein Flex.

Any major clearance issues with 1" drop? I mean I know there's going to be some.

What kind of clearance issues were you thinking? I'm dropped 2" with no issues at all.

Sorry. To clarify, clearance issues with the road. Not in regards to rubbing the fenders or anything like that.

I only scrape on the steepest driveways and if I don't slow down for a speed bump (I don't go fast anymore; I bent a wheel before ) lowered on Prokit 1" springs. 1" drop , at least in my area is still practical to DD. I'm now 1.25" lower than stock on coils; I can scrape on stuff I didn't used to.
