Reasonable price for wheel painting?

Local highly reputable body shop quoted me $150 per wheel. Anyone have a more reasonable estimate?

Not interested in powder coating so let's not get into that.

Off hand I don't and it's possible his estimate is high but you have to keep in mind that the biggest part of that project is preparation and not the painting itself. They will first have to physically clean and prep the surface to receive the paint. Next they have to chemically clean the wheel to rid any debris from the physical cleaning and finally the paint which should be applied in several coats. Talk to a few more shops and get more estimates. For sure it's not going to be cheap.

Labor rates will depend on location. Asking the world population what their local rates are isn't smrt.

For reference, I've been quoted $60-80/wheel to powder coat my 2008 STI BBS (forged) wheels. Why wouldn't you want to powder coat your wheels? Unless they're $$forged$$, there's no reason to choose paint over powder.

The wheels are forged, but let's not turn this into a debate about whether powder coating forged wheels is safe or not.

Bah. My STI wheels were powdercoated and I drove on them like that for at least 30,000 miles.

Anyways, the cost is entirely dependent on where you live.

What was included, was that just paint or also strip and prep?

I paid a little over 200 to have my ssr's painted (all 4), but i did all the prep.

$150 is fair IMO. I've had a couple of wheels painted and paid $150 for each wheel. While shopping around, I was quoted $125-200 each.

i got quoted including a lifetime warranty against flaking, etc. for $100/wheel including all prep work and paint from a very reputable shop in town. that price seems a little steep unless you're going with some special paint that they have to charge you extra for

I'm sorry Cheeseballs. I gotta share a powder story. And I gotta ask what wheels you are rolling with. I wouldn't hesitate to powdercoat anything. The last wheels I had done were magnesium. Our local guy bead-blasted, powdercoated and clearcoated my wheels for $65 each and they came out beautiful. I was terrified they would ignite or become brittle, but I thrashed that car like mad for a year and they held up great. What wheels are you painting? Are they really thin? Looking at aftermarket myself but I'm stumped. :-(

Totally depends on the price of the paint and how much of it is needed. Some paints are really thin and require a crapload of layers and, hence, time.
