Arrow 2013 BRZ trouble shifting into 6th

Hey everyone,

So, after I had my car taken in for major maintenance, it became difficult to shift into 5th and 6th gear. I should have taken it back in but I figured it was supposed to happen/would go back to normal. Taking it back in isn’t an option due to me being states away from that dealership now.

Now, shifting into 5th is more or less normal, but shifting into 6th is nearly impossible. I have to pull the shifter back with everything I have in order to shift to it. Taking it out of 6th is easier, but still very difficult. I feel like I’m about to break it every time I shift in/out of 6th.

I have tried shifting it in multiple ways and at different rpms everywhere from 2500–6000 rpms. Gears 1-4 are perfectly smooth and, like I said, 5th is fine. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, there, Subiearz -

I'd suggest you check the transmission fluid level and make sure it is up to the fill level.

Then I would check the clutch fluid level to make sure it is full.

Then I would bleed the clutch hydraulic system to make sure there isn't any air in the system.

Next, I would ring up my buddy (and master transmission expert) @Ultramaroon and ask him.

ACTUALLY, I would take my car up to my local mechanic and ask him to fix it and call me when it is done (not to call between 2-4 PM - my nap time).

I hope you get it figured out.

Honestly, no idea. Sounds like something internal. There's not much reason for discussion if you don't intend to do the work yourself. Take it to a shop.

Never mind the clutch or fluids.

@Subiearz I believe there is an alignment / reverse lockout plate being out of adjustment, too far one way.

quoting another user on adjusting the plate: Put the car in 1st gear, then loosen the 4 reverse lockout plate bolts. Slide the plate to the right until it is barely touching the reverse lockout plate, then tighten the bolts.

Also if you haven't considered it yet, the Perrin/Whiteline "Positive shift kit" should also help with things, maybe not particularly 6th gear but with everything else.

No. His first-second gear shifts are perfect. Don't mess with that adjustment. Has nothing to do with any other gears.

Do you have an itemized list of the things that were done for the "major maintenance" job? Seeing it may yield some insight into this problem.
