Actually, I get that! I still really enjoy driving but have always felt a twinge of guilt over every tank of gas burned. It doesn't stop there. It's with every load of trash, every cup of water wasted before the hot stuff comes out, blah blah blah... So I ease my conscience by repairing every electrical, mechanical, structural thing I can.

As far as driving goes, a small engine tuned for maximum efficiency on a fun platform gives me the satisfaction that I'm doing a reasonable job of at least controlling my carbon footprint - just living the whole idea of less is more. Converting to working from home has done wonders for easing my conscience. If I had to go back to driving daily, man, I dunno. It's a personal struggle I've had decades before the term "carbon footprint" came into being.

I disagree. How is it a waste if it is something you are willing to pay for because you get enjoyment out of it.

Done responsibly (as in not endangering or bothering others) I love a good evening of setting off fireworks. Of course not everyone follows that rule I realize.

I take that back! Who am I to impose my values onto others? Mrs. Ultra and I were just talking about it this morning. She secretly took our granddaughter shopping for some fireworks to contribute to the celebration last night. I only found out about it because my daughter let it slip when they swung by to pick up little brother. I wasn't upset. To the contrary, I became aware of my imposition.

As long as I'm not having to clean up after my neighbor's party, so be it. Please forgive my judgement. I'm a little better for the discussion.

The only massive twinge of guilt I have is when I eat real maple syrup. For how long it takes to come out of the tree, the 26 gallons of sap (assuming it's a sugar maple) to boil down to 1 gallon of maple syrup.. regardless if I didn't make it and paid for it, I always feel bad that I'm just putting all that effort on my waffles.

I spent ever spring until I was 12 making maple syrup with my grandfather in Quebec. It is a lot of work to dump the buckets and stir but mostly it is just a pile of standing around and waiting for it to boil off.
So about 6 hours a gallon with maybe 15 minutes of actual work.

sounds about right.

keep trying. look for the ugly one no one else wants to bid on. keep an eye on stuff that stays on the market more than a few days. don't be entirely afraid of structural issues-- if it's on the market for a while, could be possible to lowball enough to cover the repairs plus extra.

School's out so more are going to pop up. My boss has his house listed, last week there were less than 10 in the price range of his house in the area, now there are over 200.
