Air tagging your car

iOS can tell when you get out of a car just from accelerometer data. It’s kinda insane. It was in one of the betas at some point but now you need Bluetooth handsfree or CarPlay. Then again everything has Bluetooth now

Thank you all for the information. For $25 I am going to try it. I've read about how it uses IOS devices with Bluetooth on to report back but have yet to find specifically how close they have to be. @Tcoat has a great point about the immobilizer and not leaving the keys in it; having a car stolen from a dealership that was later found double parked with the keys in it does not seem as far-fetched to me.

Over the years on here there have been 3 guys that left their cars running someplace only to come back and find them gone. Oh, and one that swears his drunken brother didn't take the keys off the table, drive the crap outta the car, bounce it off a curb and then park it back in the driveway.
There are of course ways that the pros can defeat the immobilizer but they are not taking risks to steal $25,000 cars.

Hadn't heard of this since I don't iOS, but was looking at it. I found it ironic that Apple brags how they designed the battery to be easily replaceable, yet can't seem to manage to do that in their phones (not that many do anymore).

Please excuse the interruption, now returing you to your regularly scheduled discussion...

Eh to be fair the battery they went with for these is ubiquitous, used for so many things and available in just about every store you can think of.

Little different for lithium batteries.

Maybe they could've invented a special battery to allow swapping in phones, but they could've done the same for the airtag instead of making it a CR2042 or whatever it is.

IOS also knows when you are asleep and when you are awake... and tracks your search history to find out if you've been good or bad and moonlights as Santa's helper.

The airtag is best for situations like being attached to luggage because that means it's going through airports/train stations where it's much more likely to come across iOS devices that can report its location.

If you're that worried, you're probably better off getting a dedicated GPS tracker.
I've thought about this and may have to research again. When I first looked, everything I found needed to be charged periodically and the best long-term option I found was a dash cam, which comes with it's own drawbacks. I asked the dealership about lo-jack or similar and they said permanent trackers are discouraged as they tend to drain the batteries in these cars.

Plenty of phones and the devices have/had user replaceable lithium ion batteries. Honestly, it's a moot point as very few phones any longer, unless its a burner phone, have replaceable batteries, just a pet peeve of mine.
