Any Police Officers?

Hello all,

Just graduated high school, and am going to college pursuing a degree in Criminal Justice. Hopefully, after I graduate, I will be hired as either a Fish and Game Warden, or as a Sheriff's Deputy. However, there is the Academy.

What was your first day like? What was the sequence of events?

How prepared were you, and what did you do to prepare?

What did you bring with you? What did you not bring that you wish you had?

Most importantly - what happens if you are on a group run, and cannot continue? Or doing push ups and your arms give out? Can you be failed for that?

Thanks for your expertise!

Yes. If you don't meet the minimum qualifications for the physical fitness test you will fail it.

They pass it before they get fat. No retesting, once you're in you're in. Unions.

Police departments will provide you with a list of requirements for both the physical and written test prior to taking them. Usually physical test includes running, push ups, situps etc... Some even have agility courses you have to complete.

Just stop by the sheriff's office. Requirements vary by city/county.

This ^^

A friend of mine is trying to get into Oakland PD. They have several written tests that usually take all day, in addition to mental evaluations that can be a test of your ability to handle extended, mentally stressful situations. They have agility courses and what not, as well as polygraph and background tests where they may ask you about your sexual tendencies, criminal history, and so forth. This is all just to get into the Academy.

The tests are easy if you take them even just a little bit seriously. Physically it is much more difficult now than it used to be. Most departments rank applicants, so just passing is not necessarily enough, you need to do pretty well to have a good chance at getting a job offer and going to the academy.

It really, really depends on State/County/City. My husband did not have to take a lie detector test, only had to meet with a psychiatrist to make sure he was sane. The physical was also very tame for the department he's a part of, but he did also apply to another department that had an obstacle course which nearly killed him. Just do your homework, take ride-alongs, get a feel for the departments which you're interested in. That'll help you out a lot.

Each state has a different qualification for physical agility. Google your state and peace officer physical agility requirements. As far as the polygraph is concerned they are not looking for you to say you've never done drugs as much as they are looking for honesty. Most departments mandate that you haven't done drugs 3-5 years before going through the process. Unfortunately the physical requirements are not the most difficult thing you'll deal with, its the day to day life of constantly being on alert. You'll see some things that will Change your outlook on life and how you see the general public. This not only effects you but will also effect your family and home life. I suggest joining a site like policeone and read, read, and read some more.
