My new BRZ shows a moving vertical bar (which grows wider as the temp climbs), with a temp readout below it. After about 15 minutes, it reads 90C. I have never seen it more than that, although I’m still breaking it in. It’s the first vehicle I’ve owned that shows oil temp. The water temp indicator is a single bar that moves left to right as temp increases.

I never drive hard for at least the first 15 minutes anyway - no matter the age or mileage of the vehicle. Maybe I’m old-school.

This is a simple fix, cheap, effective.

More permanent options do exist as well, wired straight to your OBD2 port. I knew a guy who was tracking a Gen 3 Mazda3 and that's the route he went. He did a clean install and gained the readouts he was looking for. There is also a way to get it to display on your main screen but it's not necessarily a simple process thru android auto.

That approach is decade+ old at this point.

On MY2018+ cars (or older with aftermarket head unit), you can project the screen on the head unit using Android Auto, like I do in this video:

I also have a bunch of customized gauges one swipe away.

Forsure that's the best option, I just haven't found an app that has worked for me yet. Old method yes, but still effective. Would I take that to a track day? No probably not, I would be building a custom bracket or case ect for that with a better mounting location.

Look again at page 153 of the BRZ manual. I assume it can toggle between Fahrenheit and Celsius. I will verify this for myself when my 2022 arrives next week.

Can Subaru dealer use their software to enable the numeric oil temp display? I know they can deactivate the active noise from their software.

With the BRZ you can see your tire pressures while in track mode, I don't think that's possible with the GR86? (a complaint from throttle house iirc)

Can you actually change the display once your in track mode at all in a GR86?

Kinda strange by toyota. I know they have a neat little combo info window that they want to show, but I'm sure people would like to have the option to see other stuff.

I would really be down for someone to hack the display control on these cars now that's its all digital.

You don't have to be in track mode to see tire pressures on the BRZ. At least not on my '23.

Both cars can see it in standard mode, only the BRZ lets you show that while in track mode apparently. The GR86 has a special fixed gauge.

I used to watch the oil temp gauge in my 135 on the way to work. This is a turbo car where the oil cooler thermostat didn't open until 235. Normal city driving the oil was barely at 165 after 6 miles.
On the BRZ, the cold engine light shuts off very early,no where near normal operating temp. Then the oil temp requires at least 5 miles driving to reach 190.

The lap timer requires manually "starting" each lap, so it isn't very useful IMO.
Well short of having a transducer installed, how does the car know when the lap begins. Its a simple one push of a button to save the lap time.

That light is in reference to the coolant. It basically encourages you to baby it more while that light is on. Has no reference to the oil temperature. But in any case, as you said, it takes a good 10 minutes total or so to get the oil up to temp before you want to start ripping the car up.
