Sorry to butt in and necro a neglected thread but a month or so ago I chimed in and predicted that the US would reach a 1 Million fatality milestone by Easter. Easter is two weeks away and the latest numbers are 980,000 deaths so far. Thankfully, (if thanks are at all appropriate) the average daily death rates have dropped below 1000. So, we'll probably come up a few thousand short of a million on Easter.
But seriously, think about it. Picture yourself, on Easter 2020. If someone had told you that in two years time a million of your fellow American citizens would be dead as a result of Covid19, what would you have said? What might you have been willing to do to prevent it? Some did what they could. Others then, and now, have minimized the situation, insisting that nothing was really wrong. How many lives could have been saved if human beings had changed their attitudes and actions just a bit? We didn't, and what's done is done, but the crisis is not over. There will be other variants and they may be more contagious or virulent, or they may be less so. As a species, we are being tested, not in mystical, religious way, but in a more practical - how much do we care about our long term survival sort of way. Years ago, I did a bit of hunting. One thing that took me aback was that, if a herd of say, white tailed deer are standing in a field and one of them gets shot from a considerable distance the rest may look around and resume eating. This particularly true is the death of the deer is an instantaneous - drop where it stood - event. A good marksperson could have killed the whole herd and the last deer would be as oblivious as the first. We are supposed to be smarter than deer. Perhaps this is a test of that.

i have thought about that some. humanities largest flaw is thinking that any of us are more intelligent than that herd of deer. and not just about 'disease' in general, but how much what we do have wide-sweeping environmental effects, as well as things like food..
yesterday, as i happened to be driving behind a lady that swerved across 3 lanes while trying to negotiate a turn, while putting on a scarf, and a coat, in the drivers seat, and yelling at the passenger, i debated that question...

what fascinates me the most is the decision-making process that led to the result. why 'then'? they had to have driven at least 1/4 mile to get to that turn lane, what transpired over that 1/4 mile to suddenly justify 'installing' everything that most people won't leave the house without?
most times we are just deer and just say "oh, good. they got frank. glad they didn't put me in their sights"

Historically humans are not very intelligent when it comes to the collective whole. The individual or smaller groups are. But this is also coming from a dumbass.

The cliff notes, Blue states with strict lockdowns and guidelines failed Red states with more freedom passed (Not political opinion or conjecture, but the resulting outcome of the data and study) |
