I Love You Mom – A Therapy Session

I was 10 years old when Mom told us (Dad, myself and my younger sister) that she was going back to school. She had graduated high school when she was younger, but took care of my sister and I, every day until I was 10 years old. She said she was going to be a lawyer. I was going to be the coolest kid ever, my dad is a pilot and mom a lawyer? While working fulltime she obtained her associates degree and double majored in Political Science and Philosophy, graduating with a 3.9 GPA. A few years later, yes she graduated from Law School from a small school in Massachusettes. I was about 20 years old at this time. A year later she passed the bar exam in Massachusetts and then a year after that, in New Hampshire. I was about 23 when she officially became an attorney for a city in New Hampshire. Saturday, August 16th of this year we had spoken on the phone, we were going to visit my grandfather who was not going to live more than a month or so. We were going to stay at the hospital with him on Sunday, the 17th. That morning at 7am my Dad called me; he was out of breath and sounded frantic. ‘Mom is dead, she’s gone’. I didn’t know if I believed him. I told him I loved him and would be right there (parents, who were married almost 30 years live 20 minutes away from me). I arrived at the house, with my sister and it was true. She was really gone. 50 years old. She died in her sleep, next to Dad, it was a brain aneurysm that happened maybe 2-3 hours before. Unfair? Too soon? Evil? Yes to all of these things.

People may think they had the best Mother, but I truly did. She was a stay at home mom, a superhero, a lawyer, and as I grew older; a best friend.

For as long as I can remember she always had the most amazing flower gardens. She would grow lilies so tall they needed to be tied to sticks so they wouldn’t fall over. Yesterday I started a tattoo, so I could have her with me, forever. I’m 27 and have never had a single tattoo, but for mom I wanted something big, something beautiful. I am getting a full sleeve done for her; all Lillies like she used to grow and yellow roses (her favorite flower that she never grew). I have already started and am about 4 hours in, the artist doing it specializes in photo realism. I am sticking to black and grey with heavy emphasis on detail. At her service she was surrounded by them, huge lilies and bundles of roses. It’s been more than 2 months and this post has taken me more than an hour, to take breaks and try to hold it together. One part that broke my heart was a day after she passed my Dad was rushed to the hospital with a massive heart attack, while my sister and I ran the funeral, he was in the operating room. You can't imagine how awful things can truly get, some things you can just never be prepared for.

I understand if this is too long to read, but it just feels like therapy for me, to talk about her. Call/text/visit your mom. Tell her you love her. In our 27 years together, I never went more than 3 weeks without seeing her and its been two months now. Some days I feel lost, other days I know that I can attribute my success in my career and personal life to her. I am not lost, I was so lucky to have her.

I love you Mom.

So sorry for your loss, I can't even imagine.

Be thankful that you have such fond memories and that she passed in peace knowing she was loved.

Very touching story..when you started describing the flowers it really got to me. I think the tattoo idea is great and I plan on doing the same when those sad days come when I need to remember something that isn't there anymore. I wish you the best in your recovery..it seemed so cruel that someone can do so much for their family and also themselves, pushing themselves to be something great and then have it end so abruptly. Unfortunately that is how life is and there isn't much you can do about it, if anything. Find peace in the memories and find comfort in knowing how peacefully she left you all.

Thank you everyone - something I didnt even talk about is the bond her and my Dad shared, its amazing. My dad had a heart attack a day after she passed and was in the hospital having heart surgery during her funeral....it was truly sickening. It was fear that's impossible to even reflect back on. Its been a very trying time, but I am so close with my Dad and Sister, we have no choice but to make it through.

Dad is ok, still recovering....
