Makes sense. My cars don't sit enough for any of this to be an issue.

Things that don't degenerate with time (spark plugs, air filter, cabin filter, etc.) can go by mileage.
Things that do break down with time (oils & fluids, tires, etc.) should go by time (or mileage, whichever comes first). |

So as an example , if you drive a vehicle 2k mlles per year (use synthetic oil , and OE filter) , would you say changing the filter every 2k (so once per year , to help keep the oil as clean as possible) , then changing the oil every 2 years be acceptable ? Also, if I use Lucas Oil stabilizer ( 1/2 to 1 quart in our cars) , will that then help the oil go longer durations (of time) between oil changes ?
The main question would be is after a year how well does the "sharing" protection of synthetic oils hold up ??

Anyway, I think we are all overthinking this. To keep everything simple, it's better to put on fresh & clean underwear daily than weekly Note that there are 2 types of synthetic oil: SYNTHETIC BLEND (mixed synthetic & mineral oils) & FULL SYNTHETIC. Generally speaking, under NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS, mineral oil lasts about 3 mos. or 3k-5k miles, synthetic blend lasts approx. 6 mos. or 5k-7k miles, while the full synthetic can last more than a year or 7k-10k miles or even up to 15k. 0w-20, the oil for our FA20, comes in either blended or full synthetic. It's a smart idea to follow the PMS based on either mileage or time to avoid any problems. It also gives you the opportunity to CHECK any problems that may have developed since the last time you've taken a look under the hood (hey, some of us can be quite busy & forget about these maintenance scheds). Again, PMS is a GUIDE & not an absolute especially for normal driving conditions. EXTREME DRIVING CONDITIONS require more or frequent maintenance. When it comes to COST, oil change is a relatively cheap if you know where to find them & are smart enough not to be fooled by MARKETING strategies that make you pay EXTRA. You can get a "repackaged" FULL SYNTHETIC OIL for $20/5qts with the same or similar chemical components as the BIG BRANDED ones that cost $50/5qt. Examples of these are Costco's Kirkland, Amazon Basics, & even Walmart full synthetic oils which, if I remember correctly, are made by the same manufacturer as SHELL oils. They all have API seals & perform just like the other known brands. There are already tests done on YouTube to verify this. Unless you are racing, then you may need a racing oil.

For low mileage garage queens, once a year is fine. I have even read that some have gone as long as 2 years with no ill effect (backed up by oil analysis) but why bother? With the cost of oil, it's cheaper to just change the oil than to do an oil analysis.
