Is it normal for it to take that long for pickup? Just curious.

My BRZ arrived on a Friday, I went in on Saturday and finished up the paperwork and drove it home.

Probably not but I don't mind in this case, I have to wait a few days till I can access my garage so it works for me.

Really wondering what's going on with the production for the 86. 2-3 Year Wait? Dealers not even taking orders? Rustyoid being absolutely silent? Something's up don't you guys think? While on the other hand, the BRZ's getting in like no problem from what I've heard.
It's definitely a Canada problem. I couldn't guess on which end (Toyota Canada or Toyota Global) but someone dropped the ball.

USA folks are getting their cars within a couple of months of ordering. You can find over 450 brand new GR86s (base, premium, anniversary even) available on Autotrader.com across the whole of the US... a few wildly overpriced, but the vast majority at or very near MSRP. Zero in Canada.

Sure makes Toyota Canada look bad. Put there dealers in a bad situation through no fault of there own. Here they could sell alot more cars if they had them. low sales for the dealer now hurts future revenue streams for parts and maintenance. Eventually this negatively affects service quality. Here people are going elsewherer because they can't even get rav4's or corolla's.

Yeah, I was going to say that it's not just an 86 problem.

Take the Sequoia for example: Toyota started delivering the new model last fall, October 2022. In the 8 months since then I have seen a grand total of one in the flesh. Sure, it's only my own anecdotal experience, but I do a decent amount of driving. I see a lot of cars on any given day. I'm a big fan of Toyota trucks, so if there's any around me, I generally spot 'em. And my commute includes driving past at least 3 Toyota dealerships... or 4 or 5 if I'm running errands, etc. I'm just not seeing them.

Here's my conspiracy theory:

I could be entirely off-base here... I know nothing of how the intricacies of new vehicle sales go from factory to dealership, but hear me out.

Selling cars to Canada is not profitable.

MSRP for a Base GR86 MT in the USA is $28,400 USD. (That's $37,999 CDN according to XE.com today)

MSRP for a Base GR86 MT in Canada is $31,490 CDN. So, selling the exact same car (more or less, aside from gauges, etc.) nets Toyota $6509 CDN ($4864 USD) fewer dollars.

Material shortages are still a thing in 2023, so if you are still somewhat production limited, why would you send cars to a market that is so much less profitable?

Play out that across every car/truck/SUV that Toyota makes and it can add up to some huge numbers. (eg: A Sequoia TRD Pro comes out almost $10,000 USD less profitable to sell in Canada.)

Anyone smarter than me able to explain if this is correct reasoning? Honestly just guessing on my part.

I’ve had that thought myself as it seems logical from a profit maximizing perspective, at least in the short term. One way to get some partial insight into its validity would be to plot the US/Canada sales volume ratio for various makes and models against the percentage price differential in favour of Canadians (if any) for those vehicles and see if there is a linear trend line (ie. does a higher price differential correlate with lower Canadian volume relative to US sales).

Well, I've officially jumped ship. A nearby Subaru dealership had 4 BRZs on the lot when I called on Monday. I slept on it, and called back yesterday afternoon and put my name on one. If all goes according to plan I should have it within the next few days, possibly before the weekend.

Just an update on me, got the call from The Financial Manager yesterday, confirming Mid July. It's happening! I really wonder if the Halo White PMT were actually Unicorns.. or I'm just lucky to get one.

In some other markets it is either Subaru or Toyota but not both. Wonder if there is a handshake deal between them to not compete against each other in some places.

Picked up my BRZ last Wednesday, chose the World Rally Blue as it was the closest to the Trueno Blue I initially wanted. So far it's been amazing and my kids get giddy every time I take them for a ride in it. I was even able to score a $750 discount. Question for everyone here, dealer is offering a 7 year 60,000km extended warranty for just under 2k. My car will get 5,000km/year so not worried about burning through the warranty in 3 years. Thoughts?

I'd pass personally, the likely hood of the engine blowing is so small. Take that $2k and start slowly adding to it so if something happens that isn't covered you already have the cash for it.

I'd put that money into Winter tires + other accessories.
