Sound of (possible) dead clutch or a bad transmission? I hope neither
I am taking my car to the dealer tmr but still posting some recordings here in case anyone is interested. I will post updates from dealer if there is any.
I started to hear grinding/rattling sound after I shift into 3rd or 4th gear 2 days ago. It's not during when I put it in gear, but after that when I let off the clutch and get on gas. The sound is very short(about half a second) before settling to smooth engine revs. Here is the recording(54 seconds long): https://soundcloud.com/joshlx/shift-...d-and-4th-gear First part was recorded near the left rear wheel, and the second part was near the air box in the engine bay. My car has ~24k miles and everything stock. I didn't find any problems with other gears. I hope it is covered under warranty. Any suggestions are welcome. |

UGH! your car sounds like an old Farmall tractor ......
![]() (sorry, just being ornery) If the sound only lasts a split second, I doubt a tech is going to hear it .... ![]() Does it do it when the transmission is warm .... ?? Check the transmission oil level ... ?? Maybe a transmission oil change would help .... ?? Keep us posted. humfrz |

The little scratch sound?
Mine also has been doing this since the first few thousand miles. I've been driving manual transmissions for 23 years and have never replaced a clutch, ever. Several of my vehicles have gone well over 165k miles too, still no clutch issues. Take yours to the dealer, that way I don't have to. ![]() |

I have been able to essentially eliminate this from occurring though just by being a little more authoritive/deliberate with my shifts.

The dealer couldn't replicate the problem - as you may have expected.
I took a ride with one of their technicians today but couldn't hear the noise either. The noise may be related to the temperature. It was around 90 when I recorded the sound, but was under 80 when my car was at the dealer. I'll definitely post more follow ups! |

Replace tran oil. Let me see if I can find the thread. Someone had similar issues but it was 2nd-4th gears. They replaced oil. Mine does it if car isn't warm. After driving for like 3-5min it goes away.

Hot or cold weather or engine mine will do it. And as you experienced, it didn't happen when at the dealer...which is why I wanted you to go instead of me ![]() Just make sure it is fully documented so that when/if it becomes a bigger problem after the warrant expires, they should retroactively fix it because you brought up the issue when it was still under warranty. |

This concerns me because it started happening at ~24k miles(<40k km). I don't know what will happen when my warranty expires. |

I took my car to the dealer a second time, rode with a technician(I drove) and he heard it too.
However, when I left my car there and the technician drove it himself, he couldn't hear it again - I did tell him it only happens when the weather is hot and the car is warmed up. I don't know if documenting the noise before warranty expires will help if a problem happens afterwards. How's yours looking? |

Although yours may have something wrong I would just like to point out a couple of things that may mean it doesn't
These shifters are solid linked right to the tranny. This results in a different feel and noises then cable systems used in many modern cars. If not used to them they can seem strange but there is nothing actually wrong with anything and that is just the noises they make. The lack of sound proofing in these means that you hear every little sound that may exist in other cars but you just never notice. Couple this with the fact that the tranny is sitting a couple of inches from your butt (instead of way ahead of you like in a FWD and the noises get even weirder. I guess what I am saying is, don't get paranoid about weird noises. If everything is working OK then it probably is OK.

Seconding @Tcoat I didn't hear anything alarming in the sound file.
Some people like that this car makes a buncha mechanical noises, reminds them of older sports cars, ahh nostalgia. ![]() ![]() |
