So New Years Eve morning I was asleep and around 5:45am someone starts banging on my apartment door and ringing the doorbell, and I'm like WTF is going on.

So I go and ask who it is through the door. They say they're a county sheriff deputy, am I "spike", and a neighbor called in a report that someone was stealing the wheels off of my Corolla.

Yep. Just over a month of ownership, 1100 miles on the car, and:

Fortunately, said neighbor had been out walking her dog, her dog started barking at these dbags, and they ran off without finishing the job -- they took two wheels, left my driver side wheels each with only one lug nut left...

So this week has been a mad scramble to get a damage assessment done by a body shop and find replacement wheels.

Unfortunately, the OEM wheels that come on the 25 GRC in my trim level are apparently not even in production right now, so they're unable to be ordered at all. So this pushed up my timeline to buy new aftermarket wheels by like 2 years, and I was stuck only able to pick from sets that the major retailers have in stock right now, since I can't afford to wait 3-6 months for a "custom order" wheel from the usual JDM brands.

Thankfully the GRC club in my area is pretty nice. One guy lent me two stock wheels he had in storage and another who lives near me came by to help me put them on the car, just to make it easier to get onto a flatbed tow truck to get to the body shop.

Such a stressful week.

No, I didn't have locks. Yes, I will be ordering locks this time. Nobody ever took the Rays off of my BRZ, so I had a false sense of security :\.

Just so you aren't the low-hanging fruit, right? Or get a different kind for each wheel just to fuck with them.

Mexicans that specialize in these crimes know how to get any lug off with simple tools in seconds. Not hard.

How do they keep it a secret? Seems like something like anyone should be able to learn.

One BIG plus I like about the wheels on my Caterham is, they have a locking cover over the lug nuts. I have wondered why wheel manufactures haven’t built more with this type of theft protection built in.

Just measure each lug nut to the gram and properly counter weight the lug holes to match before balancing, duh
