No one here can say. It's all dependent upon the terms of the agreement you signed with the dealer. I would review that paperwork to determine your answer.

I don't think we mostly agree. I think you think that any dime of "profit" a dealer makes is a scam and pretty much everyone that works at a dealer should spend time and energy on you without you owing anything back. And I don't think anything I (or what anyone else says here) on this is going to change your mind.

I’m sorry but I won’t be reimbursing dealerships for their time when we can’t come to an agreement on price during negotiations, whether it’s for 1 hour or 2 days, I don’t feel bad for wasting their time and walking away. This deposit debacle is no different.

So which dealership do you work at?

It is very telling to me that you never answered my question as to your age and what you do for a living. I'll leave it at that...

If it makes you feel any better, I worked in sales during my college years, back when you could earn commission selling home theater equipment. Plenty of people wasted my time, tire kickers, but I never cried about it in the internet.

Don't think anybody is crying about it. It is just part of the whole system and like it or not that is how they do business and feed their families.
If the market was flipped and the lots were covered in cars and the dealers were practically giving them away then the same people complaining now would be gloating about how they screwed over the dumb dealerships.
They will always be evil scammers in some people's eyes no matter how well they treat their customers.

Pretty sure you are the one whining about the “non-refundable” deposits and dealer “scams.” All I’ve ever said is that it doesn’t bother me how different dealers decide to run their businesses - there are multiple ways to do it with pros and cons on each side.

That’s the nice thing about consumer choice - you can choose who you want to work with and buy from the dealer that runs their business the way you want them to. Heck, it’s easier now than it has ever been. Or you can just whine about dealer scams - no skin off my nose either way.

Btw - not that it matters, but I have never worked for a dealer and don’t do a job that is anyway related to selling/buying cars.

Yes I know, search. But my phone sucks, no computer. When I try to search, the keyboard won't stay up.
I believe it was this thread I saw a way to check status by VIN.
Can anyone help me out? Car was supposedly built late April, dealer is saying no eta. JF1ZNBB11N9755385

If the car rolled off the line just a couple of weeks ago. It has to be transported to the port, get ready for shipping, get on a big boat (of which there is a huge shortage), come across the Pacific, actually get in to a port in the US, and on and on.

Even when I custom ordered my Mustang GT track pack a decade ago, it was built here in the States. I got the VIN before it hit the line. It took less than 24 hours to be built. Once completed, even being in the States, it took another 3 or so weeks to actually make it to the dealer.

The RO/RO boats and ports are different from conventional shipping. There aren't many delays there.

It's still "A" for allocated, meaning it hasn't gotten onto a ship yet. Probably waiting around for a ride. Below is the only thing I know of.

*edit* trying this on a vin that I know is in transit, I don't see any ETA data. If anyone knows of a method to get the ETA let us know

using Google Chrome:

Open Developer Tools (F12 key)
Click on the "Network" tab
in the address bar, put: guest.dealer.toyota.com/v-spec/YOURVIN/detail
(subsitiute YOURVIN with your actual vin#)
A series of requests will appear in the developer tools pane.
Find the network request that shows {YOURVIN}?isVspec=true
Click on it, then click the "Preview" tab
here, you will see the dealerCategory:

A=Allocated
F=on a ship
G=on the ground in transit to the dealer

There are still major delays in ground transportation once the hit port though. Both trucking and rail are backed way up.
