That's funny because of all the bitching about wheel lugs that I've read here, I considered preemptively getting a set for the first time after reading your discussion this morning.

Supposedly they won't snap if you don't take your wheels off frequently. 20 studs from Rock Auto was about $38 and replacing them seems pretty simple. It's one of those simple/cheap preventive maintenance things where you're stupid if you don't do it.

I busted one a couple years ago. Haven't had any problem since I've been putting a thin wiping of anti seize.

This is the first car on which I've followed the no-lube rule. If one has developed a feel for how the lugs like to be tightened - and yes, folks, it's a thing - anti-seize is pure gold.

Let's see now, the last time I had my wheels off, was 25,000 miles and 5 years ago. Since they seem to be wearing evenly, I don't see the need to rotate them. The tires I had put on are good for 50,000 miles, which would equate to another 5 years. Even then, when I change tires again, if the shop twists off a wheel stud, it's on them to replace it. Even if I have a flat tire, I have "road hazard" protection, so if they have to change a tire and a stud breaks off, it's on them.

Besides, I have better things to do - like take a looong Sunday nap, without the toddler kicking me in the back.

So, don't call me "stupid" -

Shit! that reminds me, I didn't take my meds this morning -

So true.

Dry studs, two squeaks and a grunt - yep, lug nut tight -

Just when in the hell did changing tires on a car get so complicated ?? -

Maybe 89 lbft is a tad too much. Should prolly be 86.

I wasn't calling you or anyone in particular stupid. Let's put it this way: if you take your wheels off frequently to swap them for your track day wheels, or you're a wheel whore who has a different set of wheels for every day of the week, or whatever, then it would be smart to swap your wheel studs for something a little more robust.

Torquing them to a specific number satisfies my OCD because that way I know for sure each lug nut and all 4 wheels are equally tight.

I don't feel safe putting anti seize on lug nuts. If they come loose and my wheel falls off while going 70 MPH on the highway then I'm kinda screwed.

Recommended by Porsche and Lotus. I've been doing it for years. Never had a wheel fly off.

That's why it's called anti-seize. Otherwise they would have to call it anti-tighten.

Today I gave the car a nice thorough wash to remove all of the salt. Sometime this week I plan to put the car up on stands so I can wash the salt off the underside. I would've done it today, but it was pretty much dark by the time I finished.

Beautiful Scion, nice color, love the look of the pistons on the sides.
