Rubber Cover Fell Into Transmission Bell Housing
Hi Everyone,
I'm currently in the process of changing my clutch and after removing the fly wheel I notice two broken rubber pieces falling to the ground. This appears to be the rubber boot that covers the bell housing. Looks like it fell into the bell housing and got chewed up by the flywheel/clutch. The rubber boot left a bunch of black gunk inside the bell housing. Has this happened to anyone before? and if so how do I go about cleaning this up? Will brake cleaner work? Thanks for the help! |

Brake cleaner will work just fine.
Verus do a metal replacement that can't fall in. Apparently it happens enough to have made this product.

I was skeptical about needing a better cover. Consider me convinced.
Brake cleaner should work fine. Use in tandem with compressed air (from an air compressor) to clean super well. |

I thought it was a dumb product too when I first seen it. Thought it was just one of those products to rice up your engine bay. Until the morning I started my car and the God awful racket from that cover getting chewed up scared the shit out of me.

Thanks everyone for the help so far. I got some brake cleaner but looks like it’s off to harbor freight to get small air compressor lol. I’ll post an update on this when I get done cleaning.

If you have a shop vac, often you can swap the hose to the exhaust side and use one of the small tips for adequate pressure.
Then you can put it back to clean up the gunge you've blown all over.

Make sure the crankshaft tone wheel is in the correct orientation when you reinstall it. Teeth face in towards the sensor, away from the flywheel.

Anyone know if this is an easy thing to see if it fell into the hole or do you have to essentially do a clutch job and take the tranny apart? If it fell in, how bad would it be to leave it there?

If it's missing, it fell in. Big fat meh. Just don't drop any tools in the hole.

Checked this recently and saw that my bellhousing cover was gone too. Installed the Verus cover today. I’m not convinced it’s necessary (especially at $37) but I do feel a little better knowing there’s not a gaping hole there anymore.
Install was pretty easy. Remove 12 and 14 mm bolts. Install cover. Replace bolts and torque to 10-12 lbs-ft (12mm) and 16-18 lbs-ft (14mm). I had to remove the rubber (pcv?) hose above the 12 mm bolt to gain access to it but it pulls off without any tools.

It's nice! It screws into place and won't melt.
