2020 86 A/C R134 or R1234 ?
Title says it all did the BRZ 86 switch to the newer r1234 yet? I am thinking of upgrading from my 2012 July model the new air will be easier to fix and works way better at idle.

The most recent information I find online is from May 2019.
Appears Subaru models Made in USA are the Subarus with the newer refrigerant. (https://macsworldwide.wordpress.com/...igerant-update) {Let's make Honeywell and Dupont, aka Chemours happy, as they make the stuff} Last edited by ToySub1946; 07-02-2020 at 07:56 AM. |

It would be nice to modify these model vehicles.

If you knew(or could get from another Subaru model) the proper orifice size, and oil type needed, I don't see why you couldn't.

For one, 1234yf is a lot more expensive than 134a, 1234yf recovery/recharge equipment runs pretty slow, it takes about two or three times as long to recover and charge a car with 1234yf versus 134a (at least with the OTC/robinair equipment which is likely the most popular). And from all the dodges and hondas I've had to deal with, I've not seen this increased idle performance. Last edited by RZNT4R; 05-09-2021 at 08:40 AM. |

Some further reading about 134a -> 1234yf
https://www.macsw.org/WEB/images/Mac...R-1234yf18.pdf -Summary: Swapping a TXV system from 134a to 1234yf yields results ranging from no change to a slight decrease in performance. And right now the gas which allows this leap in performance (haha) costs over 6 times the price. Keep in mind, 1234yf was never intended to be a better refrigerant from a cooling capacity standpoint, it was designed to be less disastrous for the environment than 134a while working at near 134a pressures to ease the transition. |
