Engine rust
There seems to be rust on this cover. What is it for exactly and would Toyota replace the cover under their rust warranty?

Those are covers for the AVCS valve timing actuators. No they are not covered under warranty. Rust protection only covers body panels.

It is a car. It is made of steel. Steel rusts. You live in Canada. Steel rusts even faster. Clean it up if it bothers you. Rust warranty is for rust through. That will not rust through in 100 years.

It kinda bothers me that it's right next to a connector. I know it might not fail today. But in a few years what could the outcome be if that particular piece rustss through? Just want to do some preventative maintenance

Wire brush it off and smear some grease on it.

Like Tcoat said, the rest of the car will rust before that cover does. It's all water tight so just get in there and clean it. Do not mess with the connector and be careful to not break the socket. It's pretty delicate.

It's surface rust. Deal with it lol.
Its like those brown guardrails on the highway that aren't painted. They just let them rust and become that color. Doesn't mean it won't stop a car anymore. It's just on the surface. |

Easiest way to ruin that part is to home job paint it.
Paint could seep in and ruin those connectors. I wouldn't even wire brush it because I can be clumsy and in a hurry and accidentally break something. If it really really bothers you...be extremely careful to not hit something with your hand while "fixing that rust". That part will take another 25 years to rust through. If in 25 years it does rust through...then it will quit working and *THEN* you will need to replace it. Quick story about me... In one of my AW-11 MRs I decided I needed to "refresh my engine bay". I did a good job until I took stuff out that was bolted into the engine. When I put it back in...I didn't not know what a "Torque Wrench" was and I stripped a few (more than 2) parts. I ended up getting that stuff "tapped and died" (have no idea the past tense of that action)...total cost...20$ in parts...150$ in labor... For reference...it was where the throttle cable holder was bolted on...so I couldn't just "sorta put it back in there and hope for the best". So yeah...leave it be... |

That won't rust through in 25 years. Hell, I doubt it would in a life time. there is nothing holding moisture there to continue the process. Surface rust can appear after one brief exposure to moisture but deep structural rust requires a near constant exposure.
