Wow, $158/month? I'd go sell my BRZ if I had to pay that much. My insurance bill before I got my BRZ was $150/month for five cars (4 with full coverage). The BRZ was only another $50 month additional for me.

This is Massachusetts....that is pretty freakin cheap actually. Sorry...I should have told everyone Massachusetts has the highest insurance rates in the USA. I know a few friends who pay more than me for crappier cars. WRX STI's in my area cost almost $250 to $300 a month to insure. I pay $158 a month AFTER a Homeowners Discount, a College Alumni discount and being over 25 years old. I do have two speeding tickets on my license though. Without the discounts I would have been paying about $225.

It actually gets worse when I reviewed what I received from Optimum West it was closer to a 60% increase over the Fr-S per month with the deposit they were asking for.

Luckily I went to a different insurance broker just now and priced out several options. All of the options had BRZ and FRS rated between 37-40 in both collision and comprehensive categories and none of the insurance providers ever differentiated between the 2 cars by more than one point.

Needless to say I am now buying out of my current policy and switching to pay what I had been quoted to pay in the first place based off the FR-S. It sucks but its serious savings compared to sticking with them.

your car company is judging the car on many other factors. some of them might be like.. a subaru is a more niche brand and they dont deal with them as much. Or maybe subaru parts are worth more so they get stolen more. shrug.

I envy you guys that don't live in NY. NY is a killer for insurance prices. I pay ~1100 every 6 months for my BRZ, and that's with Geico. Liberty Mutual wanted 6000 a year!

*goes and checks geico's site to make sure the premium didn't go up*

Thats insane. I'm in NY and Geico was more than Liberty Mutual for me.

Over 40, married, multicar policy, but with an 18 year old single male in the household.

For an Envoy and a Genesis Coupe, 2500 annually. Estimated 3500 per year with the BRZ added in.

I bet the rep mixed up. He meant to call FR-S owners to tell them about 40% bump.

That's your killer. My WRX was insured under my parents' policy; the WRX and I made up half the yearly bill, lol.

Yep, I had to switch frim safeco to liberty mutual when I added my son to the policy. Safeco wanted more in 6 months than what Liberty Mutual wanted for a year.

Stupid thing is Liberty Mutual owns Safeco.

Under Safeco, adding my son tripled the premium. Pure insanity.

We've been with the same insurance company for over a decade, but I expect to double what I was paying for the WRX simply due to changing from liability to full coverage regardless. Being under 25 is expensive!

Quite a few people here have commented on how many variables affect the cost of your insurance. Here is the list of ones that I know of:
state, age, current insurance status, current insurance limits, current insurer, sex, marital status, insurance credit score (Not a standard Credit score), number of vehicles in your household, number of drivers, number of "inexperienced drivers", average mileage driven per year, vehicle use(to work, pleasure, business....), vehicle title status, zip code, homeowner status, education status, Full Coverage vs Liability only, coverage limits, monthly pmt vs single payment, whether or not you allow a driving device in your car, what the driving device says, not to mention driving record, vehicle symbol rates, vehicle category and performance adjustments, whether or not you needed a state required form, and the few I am sure I forgot. ** adding passive/active alarms and GPS devices, number of claims in past 3/5 years by fault status (Can impact no claim discounts), length of time with current insurer

In essence, there are tons of things that impact ones insurance premium, and yes, all of these have an impact in at least one state in the US for at least one insurer. If you want to know what you are rated on in your state by your insurer, look up their filings with your state Department of Insurance. 90% of what you are rated on must be filed with them. The last 10% are company specific tiering rules that can change ones rate dramatically.

I am not paid by either of the two companies I am about to mention.

Leaky can help you see your rate change as you input variables, and ratefilings.com has rate filings that can be purchased.

I live in Massachusetts as well and I pay $60 per month for full coverage with MetLife. I guess it really depends on which city in Massachusetts you live in.

My old car was on my parents policy, so, IIRC, it was ~75$ a month for a 97 Integra. I didn't exist in the car insurance world up until last month when I went to get my BRZ. For being 22 years old, in NY, with a brand new car, that's not bad, if I do say. Having a clean driving record does help.

This car requires collision and all that fun stuff, so it's going to cost more. I'll be doing an online defensive driving course when I get time. That'll drop it $100 every 6 months. And when the new policy comes out, hopefully it'll be even lower, since I'll be 23 when that one comes out.
