I actually thought that as well but don't have enough experience to say it. Only been in a mini once and it was at night so I don't remember the interior too well.

Can someone please explain to me why people keep calling this car a Miata fighter? Besides being light and RWD, there's nothing else that points to it.

The ND Miata is already faster than the 86, and costs more. Why would a car designed to be slower and cheaper than the 86 be considered the ND's competition?

Honestly it's better to just call it it's own thing, because I don't see it as a market price or speed competitor to the ND.

It takes a 29k miata to compete with a base FRS and even then the Miata is softer and not as practical. With similar tires, the ND and 86 are almost identical when it comes to lap times.

The SFR is cheaper and lighter than the ND, and will probably have just as much horsepower. Not to mention the SFR has a fixed top and has the ability to seat more than 2 people.

what evidence shows that a base miata is slower than a base frs? What evidence shows that on the same tires they are similar speeds? From what I can tell, the OEM fr-s tires seem to be in a similar class in performance to the OEM miata tires (about MP-level).

Back on topic, the sf-r is not a miata fighter. It is what the fr-s was supposed to be, a sporty alternative first car for young Japanese guys and girls. The problem is it was still too expensive, so they have to cut costs even more. I bet this will be more of a "sporty" car rather than a sports car.

I kind of doubt it will make it to the US market. If it does I bet it'll gain tons of weight and cost for safety requirements.

In Japan and most of the world the MX-5 comes with a base 1.5L engine. The S-FR is projected to come with a 2NR-FKE 1.5L engine. This car could very well be a competitor for the MX-5 in Japan and might not even come to NA even if built.

Small lightweight RWD Japanese clown shoe...

If I had to replace my 86 right now an M Coupe is totally on the table (and in the ballpark in terms of cost for the S52, but an SFR hatch would be 500-700 lbs lighter if only ~50% of the power.

The 29k(32k) Miata is the base Miata. http://puu.sh/lJRFY/b14d368010.jpg

It's also been tested quite a few times by various sites and beat the 86 marginally most of the time. Also, they wouldn't make a car that's cheaper and faster than their own GT86. That's now how engineering and marketing works.

Oh right. I forgot that the base Miata in other countries starts with a 1.5L and is cheaper.

No, you're wrong. Check the specs on the Canadian website, all the tests with the MX5 being faster than the 86 are the Bilstein and LSD package labeled as the GS in Canada (clubsport in the US) asking $37k CAD. The base model in the USA (and Canada) has an open differential and less aggressive suspension tuning which would give up some performance for $24k USD and $32k CAD.
