Motors and controllers are trivial, really trivial. The secret sauce will always be in the storage.

Anyway. Back to motoring... I think it’ll be interesting to see just where it goes and where musk/Tesla fall when electric becomes the most common car around.
The world needs such visionaries from time to time and love him or not... his vision is gigantic!

The last five minutes sounds like they could be talking about Tesla.

Losing the sense of sound is a total deal breaker for me with E cars no matter how fast they are.

Maybe they'll begin to offer you the option of piping in whatever sounds you select through the speakers at some point.

Just dial up a carburetored Ferrari V-8 and enjoy your E-drive.

Cars already are doing this so this could happen but it is a novelty in an electric car. In a regular car the owner is fooled to believe the noise is their engine so it is less of a novelty.

They should use the sound effects from the Delorean in BTTF. That would be awesome.

I'll be impressed when it can do a lap of the Nurburgring flat out without going into limp mode.

What I find unfamiliar about EV's versus internal combustion engines are how the mileage and performance are proportional on EV's because they are both tied into the battery size. This is not the case with internal combustion engines which often have worse gas mileage, as the power figures go up. Often cheap cars can have good gas mileage. With EVs, now the expensive cars will have the power and the range convenience. It is interesting.

I was thinking again about what you said, and what others have said about Tesla's performance claims. Have they ever overstated what the performance would be of their cars?

That's true for the battery, and also is partly due to them using AC induction motors. With a permanent magnet motor there would be higher peak efficiency but also higher losses at low power for a more powerful motor. Induction motors reach peak efficiency at a very low % of max torque and lose efficiency as you increase torque after that, so more available power actually makes acceleration more efficient (that's why the P100D has more range).
