Thanks!
I think for the R34, I'll take extra time with painting, and I'll try wet sanding each layer (not coat). Sucks that Tamiya doesn't have Bayside Blue (not gonna buy a spray pen kit just to be able to buy Bayside Blue paint). I just gotta remember to buy two cans of color. haha. |

This thread is really inspiring. Keep posting pics please. I don’t have the time to do this anymore but had a lot of fun assembling/painting WWII aircraft when I was in my early-to-mid-teens. Everything I’ve seen in these 21 pages is really impressive.

Posted these back a ways I think but here are some survivors from 1965 to 69.
There were many more that succumbed to firecrackers and BB guns.

Thought about that, but I read the "pearl/flakes" on touch up paint will be too large for scale models, so it'll end up looking like a Hot Wheels toy. Saw some people say the Tamiya cans spray better than other brands, as well as touch up paints. Not sure how entirely true that is, but my experience with the Tamiya cans was pretty good aside from my mistake of shaking it near the model. haha

I think I was 12-14 ish, so 18 years ago? I was not really good at patience as a kid so...
I stopped for a long while, then got into painting 3d printed models for centerpieces at my wedding which are on page 1 of this thread. Last edited by Spuds; 10-31-2020 at 06:27 PM. Reason: Because the 1 is right next to the 2. I'm not that old! |

The touch up lacquers are fine there is really nothing "special" about the Tamiya sprays. It all comes with practice and even then shit happens.

Well, tripped and fell down the rabbit hole. In addition to the R34 Z-Tune I ordered a few days ago, I also placed an order for the Tamiya photoetched detail-up set for it (seems like it'll make the model look better and more realistic; hope it's not a waste of money). I also placed an order for an R33 GT-R, and the Hakosuka "street custom."
I'll be getting the R34 in a couple of days, but probably won't work on it, or any other ones for a long time. I'll be saving these kits for days when I get bored, or if Covid gets out of hand again and we are forced to shut down. Keeping things simple, and will probably stick with Tamiya spray cans. So closest I think I can get to Bayside blue for the R34 would be mica blue (TS50, iirc). I wanted to do any shade of midnight purple for the R33, but I don't think Tamiya has anything close, so I'll have to think of another color I like for the R33. Haven't thought of a color for the Hako. Since I won't be using the OEM R34 wheels, I'll probably use them on the R33 (I still have the Nismo wheels from the R32, but I wouldn't want both the R34 and R33 to have the same wheel). |

Photo etch is very very nice for detail that you just can not get in plastic. The set for the R34 looks to be basic with very few bends so will be a good first kick at it. The trick with bending photoetch is to remember you frequently only get one kick at it. If you screw up and try to rebend it you usually end up with a bunch of small pieces you have to glue together or toss out. If you are going to continue down this path you may want to invest in an airbrush and compressor. You can get a decent starter outfit for just over $100. It would be far better than spray cans, open up the available colour range, do away with most of your orange peel issues and actually save you money in the long run. https://www.amazon.com/Airbrush-Prof...0NsaWNrPXRydWU=

Unfortunately, I don't have the space for more models. I may not even have the space for these 4, and might just have to alternate what's on "display" when ever I end up finishing all of them. So an airbrush/pen wouldn't be really utilized. But who knows, maybe I might make another impulse purchase like I did with these models. LOL
For the photo etched parts, bending is required? I just assumed they go over the plastic part? Edit: http://italianhorses.net/Tutorials/Photoetch/pe.htm Ah, "bend if needed/instructed." |
