No, that still doesn't explain why reducing ground clearance is the best bet for protecting the bumper. Wouldn't the lip scraping across somethings increase the chances of scuffing the paint on the bumper?

No because the lip will take the scrap, @krayzie explained in 2 posts up that the way that the lip is attached to the bumper, won't take the bumper with it if anything should happen to the lip. And I am running a front lip, I can't really see any physical marks much even though there are a few driveways and gas stations that scraps.
