It's really the insurance that's the killer. My insurance practically doubled adding the RS6 to the policy with the BRZ listed as the primary vehicle. If the Audi were the primary vehicle, it would've been $700/yr more.

The scheduled maintenance isn't bad apart from tires and brakes. My 75k maintenance cost me ~$300 in parts; the labor I did myself. Timing belt was part of the 75k but it was done 500mi before I bought it, at 67k; that I would've paid ~$1k for Brakes are gonna cost $1k. Winter wheels and tires I got used on Craigslist for $800.

Next year, all I have to do is an oil change (~$80) and maybe replace the front control arms and tie rods to freshen up the suspension; I'm pretty sure those are the same as the A6 and won't cost much.

They're both a lot of fun for different reasons. The BRZ is great for throwing around in tight corners and executing crisp shifts, whereas the RS6 is great for long trips and point-and-shoot acceleration when I feel the need for speed. I really can't choose a favorite!

I don't plan on having it past 100k, but if I do, not too worried about it. Most of the guys on the RS6 forum have owned them for years; apart from the DRC system and the auto trans occasionally failing, they're pretty bulletproof. If I have issues with the DRC it's getting swapped out for coilovers. If I have issues with the auto 'box it's getting swapped out for a 6 speed manual, and then I can fit bigger turbos and go whole hog!

Small update (in case anyone cares): car reached 85k miles. I ended up finding gently used OEM front rotors and pads for $300 so I didn't have to order new ones at about $1200. Did an oil change and ordered all new front control arms, sway bar endlinks, and front strut mounts. I also decided to be proactive about the DRC system so I ordered a set of Koni shocks while they were on sale. Unfortunately I blasted a pothole and damaged the steering rack, so I had to source a replacement. A reman unit from Audi was $1100 but I found someone parting out a low-mileage rack for $350 shipped, so I jumped on that. I'm not looking forward to replacing the rack, but the brake job and suspension work have been very straightforward; no weird overengineered German nonsense like I was expecting. It really helps to be resourceful with these cars and not allow yourself to get bent over by the dealership every time it needs something.



I'm trading the BRZ for a Porsche 911 this week so I will decide in the next two months whether it's feasible to keep two aging German cars or if the Audi will go in favor of something newer. I hope I can keep them both because I absolutely adore this car! It was a beast in the record-breaking Massachusetts winter we had, and I hope to keep it around for next winter!
