engine optimization and oil pan
Hi guys,
I am actually looking for a way to improve reliability on my car who's my daily driver (and sometimes track car) for cheap . On track days the oil temperature rises quite a lot and I wish to lessen the burden on it, without going adding an oil cooler. I wish to use spacers between the oil pan and the engine bottom, and also use the same thickness to move down by the same distance the oil pickup. The idea behind it is : -have extra oil capacity and use this extra mass to cool the incoming oil -extra oil = the same amount of oil cycling through engine before now cycles less trough the engine= less oil wear whilst on track -have extra surface contact of oil against oil pan to improve cooling - reduce the chances of oil starvation , the pickup end being further below the increased oil level surface. -cheap solution, no welding involved, you can mill from a steel or aluminium plate these spacers (and more if you have other projects on mind to reduce part cost) I can manage to machine these spacers by machine shops whom I work with quite easily,so making them for my car is not the problem I have now. The main obstacles I am facing is that I live in a flat and car parking wise i cannot easily work on the car for removing all the covers under the car or removing an oil pan and doing the paste joint again.i will need at some point to remove the oil pan and pickup to make the spacer at some point, but I wish to have the car not able to move the less time possible ( I have somewhere where I can do this but it's far from my place or work place, comuting by bike is nice but longer than by car). To make things easier,If someone has taken out the oil pan could you share with me theoverall height of it from the joint plane to the lowest part? And even better if you are currently doing work on you car do you have some pictures of this area or even the clearance around the OEM oil pan ? And if someone is replacing they'rs with an aftermarket one boasting increased capacity could you share this overall oil pan height with me? If you have tried this I would love to have feedbacks |

You’d be better off to get an oil cooler.

270-275F oil temp is fine IMO if you use a known-good synthetic 30 or 40 weight. If I was track-only i'd be running 40-weight, for 95/5 street/track I run 5w or 10w30 during track season. My factory oil temp gauge reliably goes to just over 270F every session, never climbs above that no matter how hot the ambient temps are.
What you propose sounds like a decent idea, but I think the risks associated with something going slightly wrong outweigh any small potential benefits... Ultimately, I don't think it's necessary for limited occasional track usage. If I was doing multiple 30+ minute sessions every weekend I'd probably get an oil cooler. Doing four ~15-minute sessions per track day a handful of times over the track season, with oil changes after every 4th track day, for me I don't think it's necessary. |

I don’t think you will gain enough to make much of a difference. If you are bent on not running an oil cooler just go with heavier oil.

A water to oil heat exchanger would probably work just as well if not better, be cheaper, easier to install, not require lifting up the car, and minimal down time.
