My point is, yes, the chassis is superbly engineered. The roof is an integral part of that design but it is covered with a paper thin veneer of steel for moar lightness.

Why did Yakima discontinue their offering?
Yeah the paint damage and denting is for real, both sides of mine are dented AND there is another dimple a few inches forward of where the rear pad sits on both sides. It sucks because sometimes I need to take more than two bikes with me and the roof is the only solution.

That Rhino-Rack version adds mounts in the ditches of the roof. I'd like to think that mount would take the weight versus roof skin. Do you think that would avoid the damage folks have seen with the clip version? Anyone tried Rhino yet?

I've gotten dints etc out of cars before using a strong suction cup. A GoPro suction cup mount works well. If you can't source one of those, try a GPS one.

Using q91 clips (Amazon) and q tower setup from yakima, never had any issues w/ dents. But it did take a while to get it to set right, just don't over tighten the towers. I traveled up to 85mph with bike on top with no issues. I readjusted the rack maybe 4x until it was where I wanted it.

SeaSuckers are your answer... a friend of mine's brother uses it on his FRS. Held their bikes quite nice and they're not cheap road bikes either. I'm thinking of picking one up for my road bike...

I think the denting comes from two things, one is the sheet metal is just so thin and the pads on the feet are too small so the weight is poorly distributed. The other is the weight of the bikes being transported, I'm moving two mt bikes so at least 60 pounds plus the weight of the racks themselves and between the super high quality pavement and the wind the amount of rocking is just too much for thin sheet metal to resist. I'd love to see a picture of the roof without the sheet metal on it so I could figure out if there's a strong enough point to put a permanent mount that wouldn't cause any damage other than the holes drilled.

Dang, thanks for posting that picture. I wouldn't think that area would be so sensitive.

Exactly... I didn't want to jump in and mention it since OP said no SeaSucker, but the thing is a great solution for our car. Easy on and off and as reliable as any other. The only other I can think of is the Saris Bones rack that hangs off the back. Well made and easy on/off as well. Not quite as sleek looking though... and possibly completely obstructing your rear view.

DON'T use a strap rack of any sort. I tried and only got about two blocks before I crawled home and took it off. The smallest bumps and as the weight moved up and down I could see the leading edge of the trunk lid in the rearview mirror as it flexed up. The lid will bend for sure.
