Squeaking noise when depressing clutch

Wondering if anyone has a problem with a squeaking sound when depressing the clutch?

This is what it sounds like. It's not my car, but it's exactly this:

It's an issue with the throwout bearing. Looks like some people have had luck getting it fixed under warranty in the US:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...t=56882&page=7

Does anyone with a BRZ have the same issue in the GTA and was able to get their Subaru dealer to fix it under the 5 year powertrain warranty? I'm at 65k km so I'm out of the bumper to bumper warranty. I've been to my dealer and asked and they specifically said the the thorwout bearing is not part of the powertrain warranty.

I remember the throwout bearing comes pre-greased and is like a 60 dollar part, got mine from Markham Subaru when I upgraded to the STI clutch assembly at 10k just to be safe.

FWIW I also changed the clutch fluid to ATE Typ 200 Brake Fluid and the gearbox oil to Eneos Gear Oil. Everything is super smooth afterwards.

Just had a clutch bleed and gerabox oil changed again at 25k with the same stuff and it's smoother than ever. Maybe try this first?

BTW I also want to mention when I got the car new, one night the temperature fell to -7C and the clutch fell kinda stiff and funny. Never had that happened again after the clutch work and still operates normally even at like -15C.

Do you hold the clutch in when stopped at a light?

I have a squeak in mine, but it's definitely something in either the pedal assembly or clutch slave. It only squeaks while the pedal is in motion, not if you hold it in any specific position.

If it's the throwout bearing you'll hear it constantly whenever the clutch is depressed and the engine is running.

*edit* - mine sounds exactly like the video.

So I spoke to another service manager at another Subaru dealer who was being a lot more helpful and transparent than Markham Subaru and he confirmed with me that for Subaru, the throwout bearing is NOT part of the powertrain/major component warranty, but IS part of the 3 year/60k km bumper-to-bumper warranty. Interestingly (and very annoyingly), apparently Scion/Toyota has been honouring the warranty and fixing throwout bearing issues for the FRS. Not sure under which warranty Scion/Toyota is fixing the issue with. Very disappointed in Subaru Canada.

My transmission and gear box are still fine. feels the same as it was when I first got the car as well. but of course 1st to 2nd feels a little "crunchy" and unsmooth as with all BRZ/FRS. Out of curiosity, how much was your STI clutch assembly?

I used to do that for a short while, but I stopped doing that now.

Well I brought it to the dealer and a private shop I go to and they both said it's coming from the engine bay and it is the throwout bearing.

thanks, I saw these threads already, but want to know if anyone in the GTA has had luck getting their Subaru dealers to fix this issue under the powertrain warranty.

From my experience the squeak is not from the TOB but rather from the pivot points on the clutch release fork.

I smeared a little gob of grease in there as best as I could and poof, squeak eliminated.

I still say transmission should be dropped to really get in there, inspect everything, and do it right but this'll do for now.
My Civic had the same noise. Big glob of urea grease on both pivot points of the clutch release fork solved it.

My FR-S made that noise a few times last summer so I'm going to do the same this year.

Since you are out of the B2B warranty I would recommend that you give lubricating both pivots on the clutch release fork a try. It will cost very little as long as the transmission is not removed to do this.

Even Car and Driver had the TOB changed in their long term BRZ unnecessarily.

"Around 21,000 miles, the clutch pedal developed a squeak that proved particularly difficult to eradicate. It was temporarily fixed by separating the transmission from the engine and fitting a new throw-out bearing, plus lubing the various components, but the squeak returned at 34,000 miles. This time the dealer installed a new master cylinder and additional lubrication to make it go away, all under warranty."

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/...wrap-up-review

Dealers are likely changing the TOB to justify the labour required to remove the transmission as a warranty repair. Ignore the part about a new master cylinder, I have a feeling the dealer just needed a reason to bill the lube job as a warranty repair again.

Bought from Japanparts. It's basically the clutch disc + clutch cover / pressure plate. After shipping and taxes it was about 800 bucks, and this was before the Canadian currency crashed. Paid another 60 bucks for the throwout bearing + 400 bucks to get everything installed.

You know when I got home today I turned off the car, and stepped on the clutch a few times to see if I can hear the same sound near the bottom of the stroke, and indeed it's there dam!

100% this. The dealership isn't 100% wrong, since it's related to the TOB, but the bearing itself isn't shot. If the bearing was shot you'd hear a worn bearing noise anytime you press on the clutch pedal.

i hate to bring a thread back from the dead. but I think my TOB or something else gave out today.

I have had some squealing at idle on cold starts for a few days now, but nothing too crazy, and it would go away once the car warmed up. Today I was pulling into a parking lot and accidentally let out the clutch too fast, lurching the car. Instantly there was tons of squealing from the clutch, and a puff of smelly clutch-smoke coming from under the hood. I parked and shut it down.

Came back out of the grocery store and started it up again, and it was squealing just a bit at idle with the pedal out, accompanied by a bit of a rattling sound, but it squeals non-stop with the pedal in. Driving seems fairly normal; there's no noise from the clutch at speed, and it doesn't feel like it's slipping if you step on it. But the engagement point feels different now, and there's tons of noise every time you so much as rest your foot on the pedal.

I was testing it in my driveway after I got home, and there was about 3 or 4 times where I would push the clutch pedal in and the car would stall out completely.

TOB?
