inconsistent brake squeaking, only happens with light brake

Hi I have experienced a situation a couple thousand miles ago. My rear brakes start to make a squeaking noise when brake lightly. Hard brakes (brake pedal all the way down) are completely silent. Light brakes (<1/3 brake down) makes a high pitch noise. This is also much more frequent at low-medium speed (30-50 mph). When brake over 60mph, this rarely happens. This also only happen in the first few brakes in a period of time.

For example, I drive on freeway (>70mph), no noise--> hard brake into ramp, no noise) --> drive on local roads (~40mph), lots of noise on light braking --> continue to drive on local roads (more than 4-5 stops later), noise goes away.

Brake pads not brand new but should still have some life left. No visible wear/loose on brake clips.

Any insight?

Thanks

Hi ya, szjalo -

How many miles on those brake pads?

Are they OEM pads, if not what kind?

Do you track your car much?

Have you had your wheels off and inspected the pads?

Maybe they are worn down to the wear indicators (whatever they are called)?

Maybe the pads are glazed?

Come back.

"Should" or do?
Start with and actual check of the pads and then move on from there.

Visual inspection.

Then I'd apply some grease to the back of the pad.

Try repeat a brake pad bedding procedure, that usually clears minor noises when light braking, often caused by slight glacing of pad/rotor

Dude doesn't even know how much pad (if any) is left so what good is bedding it going to do?

Sort of like back-in-the-day, when we used to "pump" the brakes, to make sure they were "up" to the task.
