Car shuttering when starting it up

I own a 2013 Scion FRS. I have had zero (major) problems with it since acquiring it over 6 years ago. Just recently I went to start my car and the engine starts up right away but is sputtering, check engine light comes on and vehicle sounds like it is about to stall.

My first thought is possibly a fuel issue (fuel pump, fuel filter) but then I started reading a bit and some people are saying it could be just the ECU needing to be re-flashed.

Any thoughts from those that perhaps have had a similar experience?

I have a code reader at home, I'll have to check later on when I dig it out, any idea if the port is universal to other vehicles?

Check engine light.

Go to autozone and get it read for free or buy a Bluetooth OBD adapter and read it with your phone using an app like torque.

It is universal, as long as the reader is newer than like 1993
