It's actually both. From an unofficial test myself and others did it was the Ethanol content in the fuel. It seems the pump was not designed for Ethanol. The replacement pump may have fixed this. Time will tell. I am looking forward to the silence in the warmer weather.

The dealer has ordered my replacement. My pump was never really loud, there was occasions where it was, but mostly it was a mild chirp. I will update when I get the new one installed.

It has been about 30 days on the new pumpg with about 1300 miles. So far no chirps. Still using costco 91 winter blend gas with e10. Temps here have varied from 40 degrees to 73 degrees. Same driving habits and same gas up area. No additives added to the gas. I enjoy sounding like a regular car and not a jalopy.

Got Toyota Canada to approve the pump replacement.
I'll report as soon as it's done.

This bulletin provides a procedure to address customer concerns of a high-pitched “chirp”, “squeak” or “cricket” sound heard coming from the engine’s Direct Injection (DI) high-pressure fuel pump. Not all DI pumps may exhibit this sound. Some vehicles may have components which in combination with certain fuel temperatures and / or formulations, may result in aeration of the fuel
within the body of the pump and cause this sound. This result is non-detrimental to the vehicle. Production changes have been made to eliminate the source of the sound. IMPORTANT: A “clack” or mechanical “ticking” sound also made by operation of the highpressure fuel pump is considered to be a normal operating characteristic and no attempt should be made to repair it.

Information contained in any technical document found on the STIS web site should only be used as reference material for highly trained automotive technicians. Only automotive technicians have the training and the special tools/equipment to repair Subaru vehicles.

The "It is temperature and ethanol content related" crowd are finally officially vindicated! We fought hard to prove this and now at least Subaru makes the same statement.

Too bad it is 30 degrees outside. Won't hear any crickets until it starts warming up closer to April. I figure we should have concrete answers by then - the procedure to get the pump replaced at Toyota (assuming they recognize the TSB?).

I sure hope so because I feel like the sound got worse over the summer. Maybe it's psychological, but I would like it addressed without me having to spend $$$.

Just make an appointment and tell them about the TSB. I don't think anyone on here has been denied this fix.
