Actually might not be far off. I read an article that Toyota is hurting and is now also starting the new of 2012 with a 5% hike. 3k-5k raise for the same exact vechicle from what I read in an article a few weeks back. I am not sure if this has happened.

From all the PR Toyota is giving, I'm starting to think Toyota has lost its roots and is all over the place now in terms of types of vechicle.

However, the price will be artificially low the first year of production to stir excitement and garner a large potential purchase market (almost all car companies do this) then adjusted upward over the coming model years.

I think it will be close to that. A MX5 cost $23,985 with a 5sp manual and 16'' wheels so what would you expect the FRS to cost with a 6spd manual and 17'' wheels? I see it matching the MX5 price or being $500-1000 higher.

I can't believe the MX5 is so pricey for what you get. It seems like a 20k flat car to me.

The Mx5 is a RWD roadster. It is priced low. Show me another RWD roadster that is even close to it in price? Remember roadsters are 2 seaters...so the next RWD roadster is the 370Z roadster.

The base FR-S will be $22.5k

You honestly think this car will be cheaper than a Mx5? I highly doubt it.

tripjammer, I am going to be a party pooper again, although I really am rooting for your predictions and also I think those are the right prices in the US markert REGARDLESS of what Toyota is going do in Japan and other markets.

If you look at the 33rd pic from the top of the leaked training manual, that is a table of perceived competitors with their specs and prices. The third column in the table is the MX-5 (In Japan, it is called Roadster) and that is a model that comes with a 6MT and 17 inch wheels, not an equivalent of the base model sold in the US.

- 2.6 M Yen for MX-5 with a 6MT and 17 inch
- 2.79 M for 86 GT (roughly an equivalent to our Scion FR-S)

.........

Hope Toyota won't set the price of FR-S relative to the price of MX-5 similar to what they are in Japan.

Ah yes the FR-S will be...its just a coupe not a roadster. The BRZ premium will be around $24k, so the FR-S has to be cheaper.

This car is not a roadster or convertible so why are people comparing it to the Miata MX-5?

The closest car is the Genesis 2.0t. And that is a way bigger car.

One fact that would give us (US buyers) any comfort (at least until Monday next week) is the fact that the targeted buyers in the US and Japan seem to be very different. In the US, the targeted buyers are still younger buyers as the car was originally intended for. During the process of the development, things changed and I am sure they overspent development money and overspec'ed the car. In Japan they started sending out messages in sneaky ways saying "ah, this car is not really for young buyers, but more for the empty nesters in their 40's or 50's or singles in their 30's who have more disposable incomes (hint: this car is NOT very affordable any more in Japan)". In the US, that does not work. They HAVE to sell the cars to the younger enthusiasts if they want make it a success. At least, that's what I think.

That's Toyota 86 GT
That's in Japan in yen
That's just a comparison chart, even the defunct RX-8 is on it.
We are in the USA and we deal in Dollars
Our cars are cheaper in price.
Scion is known for getting a lot for your $$$.
Scions are cheaper than most other Japanese cars.
Price will be $22.5k

Remember our FR-S as we know it has no HIDs, or push start or dual zone AC. Its a very basic car even for a scion.

$22.5k

We will find out Monday. I hope I am right. And i hope that is a base price and scion finally offers options.
