Clutch + spring delete should be good haha.

Finally decided to remove the spring after following this thread for some time. When I adjusted the clutch height, it made the pedal feel much softer than the original height. The spring should really be adjusted based on the new pedal travel. Removing it improves the feel for when adjusting the height. This modification is not easy to undo though.

Clutch Helper Spring Removal

Just tackled this myself, found it helps to remove the pin and clip on the other end of the clutch actuator where you would screw/unscrew the rod to adjust the pedal height.

The clutch will then hold in two positions, either all the way to the floor, or up touching the cruise control sensor. With the pedal to the floor, remove the pin and clip attached to the pedal.

Once removed, push up on the spring assembly with a screwdriver where it connects to the pedal and the whole thing should pop-off. Took some force at this point, the connection point is extremely tight with the spring on. Put everything back in reverse order, test and enjoy!

Did this this morning between dropping off the check to pay for the car and driving to work. I ended up prying the retainer clip off with a big flathead screwdriver (literally levering it until it bent and gave in), then levering the pin out as much as I could get leverage for. The last little bit took a pair of pliers and some wiggling.

Removing the spring and perch was the tricky part. I grabbed a pair of channel locks, had them gripped firmly on the body of the spring and pulled down while depressing the clutch pedal. The end result launched the top perch a few inches into a nook behind the dashboard, but the spring is out.

The result is a clutch that feels like a clutch. I've been daily driving stickshift for years and could not manage a consistent smooth shift with the car as it was delivered. The minute I got into the car without the spring there was no more guessing about bite point. I'm pulling slick, smooth shifts every time without having to think about it. Heel-toe downshifts became worlds easier, and the overall driving experience improved drastically. It's also much easier to avoid stalling at low speeds on hills or in reverse.

Is this really necessary? You would think some of the video reviews would have mentioned this.

Nessecary? No. But if you're used to driving stickshift cars with more traditional clutches, this will make the clutch feel more natural.

Any downsides to this? I might do this but I'm afraid that it might cause problems down the road?

How did you guys manage to pry that damn spring off?! I tried every angle and method I could think of and never even got close. I'd rip the entire pedal off the firewall before that spring would pop off... I gave up halfway through the job.

Any specific tips with pictures or more detailed instructions? Thanks for any help guys!!

I don't see this causing any issues considering clutches in most cars last hundreds of thousands of miles without such a spring.

Once I got the retainer clip and pin out, I grabbed the spring from the side with a big pair of channel-lock pliers and pulled straight down while depressing the clutch pedal to the floor with my other hand. It popped out and launched the top bit a few inches into a nook in the dash. Fished it out, and done.

For the longest time, I never found the clutch smooth in my 2003 Celica. But, after driving it for ten years I have much improved my driving skills and found the sweet spots of the clutch.

Remove the pin where the clutch pedal arm connects to the clutch master cylinder, what you typically turn to raise and lower the clutch pedal. Once disconnected, pressed the clutch to the floor, this should release tension of the helper spring. You need to push out the pin holding the spring in, then take a flat head and push really really hard where that pin goes through. It will eventually pop-off.

I think the clutch is perfect, but I guess it comes down to personal preference and the ability to be an adaptive driver. Some people are totally one dimensional in this aspect, they can only drive well under conditions ideal to them. I have a friend the same way, gets in a car and if the clutch does not grab right off the floor,he considers it undriveable. No matter how many hours he spends behind the wheel,he never adapts. His first mod is to the clutch pedal 90% of the cars he buys.

I don't think people are doing this mod because they can't adapt. They do it because everyone drives different. Not everyone sets the seat and steering wheel the same way, so I see the clutch pedal just the same. It IS adjustable, so why not try different settings until you really like something?

I never thought about adjusting the grab height, but I set it to grab right off the floor and guess what? It's way better now. I'm trying this mod to see if there are any other free improvements. If I don't like it, I'll reverse it. But I'm not doing any of this because I can't adapt...
