Do you think insurance will total my BRZ?
Lady T-boned me at an intersection. Everyone's ok, car's fucked.
2014 Subaru BRZ 6MT with 82.5K miles. Progressive says they total cars if repairs exceed 80% of the value they determine for the car. What do you think? I've got some people telling me it's 100% totaled, and some others saying it's not. Video: https://photos.app.goo.gl/KtUrwc4OYTLkoMr52 Pictures: |

Where you will know if there's a ton of damage isn't the area it got hit, it's the areas NEXT to where it got hit. The body lines above the door, is the metal straight and good as new or rippled? Is the area under the door (as in underneath the car) still straight? Do the jack points look unperturbed? Did the rear wheel get smashed too? Is the subframe damaged or control arms?
If those things are fucked the car is fucked. Airbags increase cost right quick, but based on the pictures I could see a day of bending metal back into place, a quarter panel, and a door (all used of course) and back on the road for <$4k. That'd probably be a pretty shoddy repair though. |

Airbags being set off is probably a good indicator that it's totaled. Contrary to popular belief, all that metal creasing won't buff out.

If it is her fault I'd push for a total.

Looks totaled to me.
PM me when you start to part out. Glad you and everyone else are safe, that looks like a pretty serious crash. |

It's totaled.
You don't bend that metal out, because shaping metal with hammers is more time consuming and expensive than any shop wants to deal with. Because it's not cost-effective, few people know how to do it any more outside of specialty restoration shops for antique vehicles and aircraft where body panels aren't available. While it's fascinating to watch those guys work, it's pointless on a car that costs less to replace than it would cost to hammer out. That rear quarter panel is also not a bolt-on panel. It would have to be cut out and welded. As soon as you start talking about welding, the cost goes way up. Not as expensive as hammering and rolling metal, but expensive. When they make their first offer, balk at it and tell them the car is worth more than their estimate. You can usually get a little more out of them. If you have alternate transportation, don't be afraid to make them wait a while before you settle. Adjusters are evaluated in part on how quickly they settle claims, and they can be a little more cooperative if they think you're settled in for the long haul. |

Yes it is totaled. The wrinkle in the rear quarter panel almost always equals totaled.

I don't care how much insurance gives me as long as they total it, I have gap insurance to cover the rest of my loan amount.
It's possible that suspension/chassis components were damaged too. I was able to drive it home and it was fine though, but it did pull to the right a lit which it never did before. @Leonardo I was wondering about that "S" shaped wrinkle. What do you think about it? Perhaps that portion of the quarter panel is attached to the inner part and since the outer part bent, the inner part bent as well? This would bode well for being determined a total loss. Yeah if the damage were just to the rear quarter, I could see them maybe repairing, but since the door got hit and the door jam is a little crumpled, I think that complicates things more. Window is smashed, curtain and seat airbag deployed. Honestly just hoping for a total. I've heard of people with 86s with way less damage and mileage being determined as total losses. We'll see. |

If you have recently spent money on maintenance items, push the adjuster to bring up the sttlememt amount. We had a jeep grand Cherokee that was rear ended at fairly high speed. Bent the chassis and made it a hump back.
In the prior 6 months I dropped $$$ in new shocks, tires, other maintenance items. I put together a spreadsheet and pulled together all the invoices etc. They came up a good bit on their settlement offer. I got $700 more than I was hoping For. There were a few things they tossed out but I demonstrated flexibility and I think that went s long ways with them. The medical stuff was a separate transaction. Lawyers and stuff. Court. Etc. |

I would hazard a guess on it being totalled. High miles and lots of hard to fix panels plus airbags.... even if they want to fix it, personally I wouldn't want that car back.

I did not mention before, but I am glad everyone is ok. From what I can tell from the photos, the part of the car that needs replaced is expensive to do so, and so IMO, they will absolutely total the vehicle. It does not matter if it dives good or not in this specific case.

Sorry for your loss.
Glad it gave 90k miles of service before its demise. Please post the verdict. The panel gap on your trunk is interesting. |

Thank you. Yeah I noticed the panel gap too. Don't think it's always been that big... I'll definitely bring it up to the insurance people.

Yeah you can see how much the trunk gap widened here. I also think the crash popped it open but I was able to close it.
