It looks like Mazda tried to satisfy the desire of both those that wanted a coupe version and those that wanted a removable hard top version with one compromised car. As with most compromises it satisfies no one completely.

I find it interesting but dislike the flying buttress and vertical rear window glass design.

2016 World Car Of The Year Award Goes To Mazda's New MX-5

Quote:
The road to the 2016 World Car of the Year has ended in New York, where the winners in five different categories were announced.

Crowned 2016 World Car of the Year is the new generation Mazda MX-5, which beat the other two finalists announced in Geneva, the Mercedes-Benz GLC and Audi A4, and will take home the prestigious award. Mazda's roadster was the vehicle of choice in the World Car Design of the Year category too.

With an open-top sibling on display at the New York City event, the Audi R8 Coupe is the 2016 World Performance Car, as it proved to be more popular than the other two finalists, the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe and Honda Civic Type R, while the World Luxury Car award went to the new BMW 7-Series.

Last but not least, the Toyota Mirai FCV left the Chevy Volt and Toyota Prius (Hybrid) in the shadows and walked away with the World Green Car award.

The road to the 2016 World Car of the Year begun at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, when the initial nominations were made. Four months later, the list was reduced and at the beginning of March, Geneva was the place where the jury, made out of 71 international automotive journalists, gave us the three finalists for each of the five different categories.

2016 World Car of the Year - Mazda MX-5
2016 World Luxury Car of the Year - BMW 7-Series
2016 World Performance Car of the Year - Audi R8 Coupe
2016 World Green Car of the Year - Toyota Mirai (FCV)
2016 World Car Design of the Year - Mazda MX-5

I seriously dig this new hardtop version. A slight drop in ride height and a set of TE37Vs will make this thing completely jaw-dropping

Im not feeling the C pillar's black plastic looking window.... They could have made things simple with a manually removed top, but I guess they choose the power retractable roof which adds weight to keep the same trunk space of the soft-top

Makes sense for them now since they have no way of reworking a rotary coupe back into the line-up.

What kind of clueless ass hat is that dude on the video? Does he even know anything about cars?
There has been retractable hard top versions of the Miata since 2008. Standard option since 2013. His Google-fu is nonexistent.
