I did something like that esrlier this year and the bruise lasted FOREVER. It was part of the toenail too, toward the back. It was like three or four months until the nail had grown that out enough that I could remove it.

I managed to break the "distal phalanx of the great toe" by stubbing my toe while wearing shoes. I sent a photo of the affected toe to the Teledoc service my health insurance has. They told me to go directly to my local urgent care facility and get an x-ray. I ended up wearing a post-op recovery shoe for about a month.
