I know it's a challenge, but this can kill the most valuable parts of the engine if the RTV has nowhere else to go.

I have seen it too, mostly on motorcycle cases.

Where is that picture from? Procedure is to apply to the lower pan, not the upper pan.

No I am wrong, it is the upper assembly that gets the FIPG applied.

I was too lazy to verify. I only suspected it. Shame on both of us.

Engine is always upside down on the stand.

Definitely curious about the silicone in the screw holes but Justin seems to have experience on quite a few cars including the last gen.

that's great, do it yourself. but how do you know you're not applying even more and creating the same problem all over again?

the question i still don't understand is why doesn't everyone make their own gasket for this?!?

it appears to be 2 singular parts touching, so there's no extra sealant needed to seal the seams between engine halves... so grab some gasket material, and cut to fit...

He probably added more silicone than was there in the first place…

Also, the silicone that gets stuck in the pickup doesn’t only come from the oil pan. It can come from the front timing cover mating surface as well. It can continue to break off from there and plug up the pickup.

We really need to figure out how to inspect and clean the oil pickup tube without taking the oil pan off.
Someone on FB posted that his Subaru techs were able to take a photo of his filter mesh without taking the pan off.

Great catch, that photo was clearly taken from a few inches "down" from the tip of the pickup tube!

Way too much is being made of this. I don't endorse this preemptive DIY disassembly of the engine. I certainly don't endorse publishing amateur youtube videos of sloppy work, but it's a free internet. Have at it.

Tbh all someone has to do is weld on a bung right where the oil pickup is and have a plug there. Drain oil, pull plug, use long pick to clean out the excess rtv, plug it up and repeat every oil change as a precaution

Or just full send cause it being a Subaru boxer it’s likely going to go kaboom one way or another
