I was thinking about this issue a while ago, and I decided that if I was denied a repair because of competing, I would spend money on a good attorney because when the head engineer brags about having enough room in the trunk for race tires, the car should be capable to participate autox or HPDE days with undue damage. In other words, if it is sold as a sports/track day car, but it can't handle the stress, then it sounds like intentional fraud to me.

I never compete with plates on my car. License plates are for the roads. And as for names, lets just say I typically have some codrivers.

However, I think its somewhat irresponsible to track the car during the initial break in period, prior to the first scheduled maintenance.

For the first 1,000 miles or so I agree.. after that.. game on.

Also all warranties have exclusions for "abuse" and "negligence". Autocross and track days can easily be defined as abuse if they want to deny the claim.

I'm never had a warranty claim with my cars though so I've never had to worry about it.

They cover everything but tires and normal scheduled maintenance for the bumper to bumper warranty.

Technically you should never say "void my warranty". You can't void anything, you can just be denied warranty coverage for that issue. Just an FYI cause the statement is usually all over car forums.

Also, often times warranty coverage with mods/racing is highly dependent on your dealership and regional reps. At least with Subaru. Some will look for any reason to deny you coverage and others will give you the benefit of the doubt.

There was a good long discussion of this at the Long Beach Event with top brass at Scion and Toyota. Basically, they said they weren't going to put features in a car and then deny warranty because you use them.

As long as the part is covered under warranty and it fails, they will honor the warranty. Like mentioned above if you start tacking stuff on, then all bets are off.

This was asked specifically around autocrossing, etc, and in reference to things like being able to turn TC and such off.

Any other 1st86ers remember it differently?

Basically this mean if you attend one autocross and your gearbox fail 5,000 miles later, you might be out of luck.

And yes some manufacturers/dealerships do actively seek that type of information.

Scion Warranty on the other hand apparently doesn't have such an exclusion, of course any failure that can be linked to an aftermarket part will void the warranty. Linked being a keyword, for example aftermarket shocks would not void your warranty if the the gearbox broke.
I got it this info from a Scion (Canada) rep but I would appreciate it if someone could confirm this.
Technically how would they know if you were at an autocross?

Some manufactures actually have "spies" at events and will put you on a black list. Others will check local autocross event results.

I've had my warranty voided by Ford for a single autocross event. Complete warranty, completely illegal based on the US Magnuson-Moss warranty act. It didn't matter though, the closest lawyer that would even consider taking the case was over 100 miles away and wanted $10k to even consider the case.
Ford had pulled up the local club's website and combined that with the fact that I had hit the rev limiter in the vehicle to void everything. I ended up fixing the problem the vehicle was in for on my own (simple vacuum leak on the intake, $20 fix) but I will never buy another Ford product again. I know, I know, I shouldn't have bought one to start with, but protect yourself. There's a reason I don't even put my exact location on forums. You'd be amazed at the number of spies that troll forums from different car and accessory distributors. I've been contacted numerous times from vendors/companies for posting a scathing review of a product, even when purely factual with little to no emotion involved in the writing of the review.
When you get your car, cover your butt and remember that someone is watching your every move. Don't post anything about doing something stupid in your car, breaking it and then bringing it in for warranty, because often, the manufacturer will find that out as well.
Surprisingly enough, I'm really not a paranoid person.

That's stretching it a bit far I think. And even if they did dispute you can always reply with the classic "I just driving the car the way it's meant to be driven" haha.

Very informative thread.

Ultimately, the manufacturer is the big dog... And if they want to deny, they will surely deny. Then it becomes the client's problem and he / she has to choose how much energy and time they want to spend on disputing it with the highest level.

I really feel that this is an extremely sensitive topic, and manufacturers try to SELL their sports cars as best as they can... And by doing so, the consumer may tend to misunderstand the manufacturers advertising / portrayal of the sports car... And then the 'fine print' is pointed out.

What I have learned is that the manufacturer is a business, and they will try to make and save their money as fairly and wisely as they can... Therefore, they may not want to stretch their legs within the specific warranty of a sports car, and for the way it may be intended / presented to be driven.

At the end, a sports car may likely become more of an emotional purchase for the client... But for the manufacturer, it is their business after everything is said and done.

Only my opinion, whether right or wrong.

I plan on registering for all events as Mr Stig.

I think it would be nice to get an official word from Scion/Toyota on this.

No manufacturer is going to say "sure, we'll cover your car if something breaks at an autocross/track day/etc."

I had a wheel bearing replaced in my last car under warranty. Was it the result of autocross? Maybe, maybe not. The key is that the damage must be "the result" of a competitive event. That can be hard to prove. Also, "competitive event" can mean a lot of things.

If you are going to race the car stock...
1. Keep your name and car separate. Tape over your license plate, use a pseudonym for your car or yourself. Make it difficult to find an excuse for denying a claim. You don't have to lie, just don't give them a reason.

2. If something breaks, be realistic about what you expect from the dealer. If you roll in to the dealer on corded Hoosiers and ask them to replace a wheel bearing. It's probably not going to happen. If you autocross occasionally and your AC is broken, no problem.
