They would be all planned together. One is not "based" on the other.

Fortunately the Toyota design language does not have a stupid looking smile.

I'd say the overall shape was conceptualized mainly by Toyota in the concepts leading to and eventually resulting in the gen 1 car.
Now, you can tell Subaru had some hand in the exterior changes, aside from their own front fascia. The side vent/fin for example very much resembles the execution of the fin on the STI and WRX models. And that is changing on the REXs soon, incidentally. The taillights resemble the new WRX ones as well. Seats are Toyota on the bottom and Subaru on the seat backs. Dash is probably mostly Toyota. I mean after all, Subaru has all of two dashboard designs running for like 5 models, they just don't have the Toyota design team's numbers. I respect how Subaru milks the crap out of every design, using dashes in multiple cars and SUVs. It saves costs and you know they developed their designs carefully since they have put all their eggs in relatively few baskets. There's a good contrast between the hugeness of Toyota and the comparative smallness of Subaru, yet they follow similar philosophies in many ways. Both take a lot less risk on designs than they used to way back as well, and this results in products through corporate sharing. It's like the Uber of car manufacturing sort of. The end result is bringing this product to a store near you.

I'm not even sure what a "premium" signal stalk would look and feel like. What am I missing with this and not having one?

Can you feel the difference in how the volume/power buttons feel on an old cheap Android phone vs a new flagship smartphone (Android or iPhone)? It's the same: "does the job" vs "... and also feels nice". The 1st gen BRZ signal stalk is OK. It does the job. But it has a bit of a plastic "crunch" to it every time you engage or disengage it. It also sometimes has a weird feeling when you want to hold the left turn signal while turning the steering wheel right, or vice versa. I think a Lada from late 1990's felt the same way. The 2nd gen has a more refined feeling to the signal stalk, and it doesn't give you an impression that it can snap if you pull it just a little harder. It's no longer mechanically connected to the steering wheel, so it doesn't fight back when you turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction. Not that the 1st gen stalk bothers me, but having tried both I'd definitely pick the 2nd gen stalk over the 1st gen stalk. I'm pretty sure most people who never had a 1st gen 86/BRZ would make the same choice. |

I'm glad that its better, and I agree from the pictures I've seen of the new interior its an improvement. If they offered the original and the new as they were, I'd probably end up picking neither because I like the exterior of the old and the interior (for the most part) of the new.

My brother in law traded his Bentley for a newer one yesterday (2020). Why? Updated signal stalks, of course.
